mrsmccardell- Do you think the student activity book is necessary for Level Pre-1?? I have finally gotten a moment to try and find and price parts and pieces. I have read many people saying they didn’t think the Zebra book was necessary, but the Lizard book was good, and that the Zebra puppet was worth the money. I will be teaching my 6 and 3 year old but I think the 6 year old might be slightly insulted by the simpleness of the student activity book.
Are you targeting this more for your 6yo? If yes, I would just start with level 1 (even at a slower pace if nec.). All of the activities in the teacher manual are having you use the picture cards for rhyming games or what does the word begin/end with. Your dd may need that but after so many repeated games I realized it was geared for the much younger child. In that case, do you feel like teaching a 3-4yo to read? It became busy work for us.
The puppet is wonderful and is part of our beloved puppet collection. He became pure entertainment and a distraction so we put him aside. The Lizard book is a nice read.
Deb, Thankfully I looked at the student book that appeared unused! We used up to pg 41. You can have it for free if you want. Otherwise, I’ll just send the teacher manual if interested. $8.50 shipping incl.

I had an email conversation with Merry from AAR and she suggested with my DD6 having a hard time blending sounds, rhyming, and reading small words on a page even though she just read it on the other that I might just start from the bottom to make sure that I haven’t missed teaching her something and it would help her grasp phonological awareness more (she is struggling with this a lot and I suspect she is dyslexic due the many “clues” she displays). I figured that if we moved through it quickly it would be ok because I can use it with DD3.5 who is begging to learn to read every day.
Oh. Well, I bought it for my dd with special needs b/c she couldn’t rhyme, etc but it only caused her frustration. I think mostly b/c she wasn’t ready. She’s now 9 and working on words like: swim, frog, storm, etc. and this is after not being ready at ages 5 and 6.
I don’t share this to try and steer your direction, rather, to let you know that she still struggles with rhyming and if we stayed with that it would have delayed her further.
We ditched AAR and went with ABeCeDarian which is also a recommended program for dyslexia. She has made tremendous progress. I was using AAR with my son and started realizing that there are sooooo many rules taught that she would get lost with all of that versus just learning to read. It’s not that the rules aren’t taught but they are taught later.
So, hopefully I didn’t confuse you but if you still want the AAR material let me know. If you have any more questions about the other program let me know. The author is readily available and has one specifically geared towards homeschoolers as well as youtube videos.
