Is this narration?

I’ve been reading the posts about narration and young children and wondered if this counted. It’s book related but came from TV shows (Between the Lions). Sometimes my son will come up to me or my husband and say “I’m going to eat you up!” (He’s being the troll in the Three Billy Goats Gruff). Then we are to respond like one of the goats. He can also do this with other shows we’ve watched over and over. Is this a form of narration? Just curious.

    Karen,

You are right, children will narrate, regardless of the source. They are driven to share what they know with those they love, especially Mommy and Daddy. Your son is 5, right? I’d continue to read wonderful books to him, be careful of too much tv (which I’m sure you are doing), and encourage his ‘telling’ in whatever fashion it comes.

As he gets a little older, 6 or so, he’ll want to retell short passages from stories you read to him. The pure narration skill that Charlotte Mason talks about is being able, after one reading, to retell a passage in the child’s own words. The point being that, as we think about and retell something, it is cemented in our own minds. Concurrently, the habit of attentiveness is being worked on and the skill of composition is learned progressively, versus sitting him down at age 10 and saying, “Here, write a report.”

Your son is so blessed to have a mom that wants work hard to follow a path of schooling that she believes is best and take the time now, while he is little, to learn about it. Have you read through the ‘getting started’ page of this site? It’s on the left side of the main page.

    Blessings,

    Cindy
