Hi! wanted to share my weekly schedule to see what you girls think. I am always (I mean always!) feeling like I dont do enough. My son is supposed to be starting 1st grade, however, since he has autism we have decided to just enroll him as special education so we dont have the pressure of being at “grade level.” He is 7. Our classes dont even last 15/20 minutes. On good days they do but on not so good days they may last 10 minutes top. So Anyways here’s what we do:
*Phonics (including sight words, phonics, phonemic awareness): 5 days a week
*Science/Nature study: we do a walk once a week and try to start the habit of the nature journal but try to get out to play every day (when it’s not so hot)
*Music appreciation: we listen to an specific composer a little bit every day and once a week we will talk about him/her.
*Handwritting: he does five minutes of practice every morning (that’s all I can get him to do!) and twice a week we do a longer session.
*I read to him every day so that way we cover more science, geography, history, literature, etc.
*Bible: 5 days a week
*Art: once a week
*Math: we do basic math 5 days a week
*Foreign language: we technically do that everyday since we are bilingual! 🙂
Add to these ABA therapy three times a week, Ocupational therapy, physical therapy and speech done both at home by me and with professional therapist at the hospital.
Somehow, since our sessions are shorter sometimes than 15 minutes I feel like I’m not doing enough! I try to remind myself that is better a little bit every day than waiting for that magic day when he will “sit” down for 20 minutes or longer to listen to me 🙂
I think at this stage the 20 minute guideline is more of a maximum than a goal. My DD is almost 7, starting year 2, and fairly advanced with a good attention span, but most of our lessons stilll aren’t more than 10 minutes. We are able to do more of them in a row than your son can probably handle right now, but each subject doesn’t take much time. Quality is more important than the time. The only things that reach 20 minutes are sometimes science (if there is an activity involved that the kids want to keep doing) or sometimes a literature read-aloud if I give in and read a second chapter.
It’s also okay to spread things out, so if you don’t get through as much of something as you’d like before he loses focus, you can always come back and do another 5 or 10 minutes later in the day.
Sounds great to me! My 7YO son has some cognitive differences, and he is not able to do a 20-minute lesson either. He tries his best most days (well handwriting he doesn’t always but everything else he does). But I think this sounds like plenty!
