Whenever I bring home a new picture book, I read it and jot down ways I could use it. For example, if it’s a Caldecott winner, I might write down “talk about the illustrations and try to duplicate the method.” If it’s a rhyming story, I would want ds to identify the rhyming pairs. I don’t try to force subject matter where it doesn’t exist, though. Is this true to CM or more of a unit study? Just curious.

I’m too new at this to know for sure, but I DO think it sounds really fun! 🙂

This sounds like what’s called a literature-based unit study, the Five In A Row series hinges on similar ideas. I think it’s very easy to incorporate this type of learning method into a CM style, even though it isn’t necessarily “pure” CM. We have used several literature-based unit studies (such as FIAR and Prairie Primer), even creating our own for certain beloved stories and have found them to be very rewarding (but they do require a lot more effort and planning on my part). Sounds like you have great ideas, I’m sure your children will be making great “book friends” as they learn 😀
