Sort of a collection of living book according to science topics?

I was just thinking about this today as well! I think Christie (MissCeeGee)has used living books alone for science. Something like this would be great to use with any science curriculum!

There are several shorter lists, but I haven’t come across anything comprehensive.  I’m planning next year and I’ve just been Google-ing Living Books and/or Charlotte Mason, along with the topic (astronomy, birds, trees, etc.).

I tend to research by topic and see what I can find.  This year we covered weather/natural disasters, geology, human anatomy using living books for elementary ages.  I’ve tried apologia elementary and jay wile’s new elem books and don’t care for either. I prefer living books.

Also, the Outdoor Secrets Companion and the new Pond and Stream Companion from SCM are PERFECT!!! I can’t wait to do the new study next year with ds5 and dd8 (then).

When my kids were in elementary, they just picked a topic and we would go to the library and check out all the good books on that particular topic. We read through them and then moved on to the next topic of interest. We covered the human body, reptiles, mammals, sea life, birds, machines, etc. this way.

In searching for good science books, I do not depend on my public library. Most of their books are great for photographs, but are factoid type books (dk, usborne, etc.). We use those for the pictures, but try to find older books with an actual story to tell as they are far more interesting. Some authors – Selsam, McClung, Zim.

I have some posts on my blog on what we’ve used for geology:

    Fossils:

    and weather:

and I have one coming out in a few days on High School Biology. We’ve found too that living books work so much better for us than Apologia or other curricula.
