I have this book for my 2nd grader, but was wondering if I use the SCM curriculum guide for picture study, poetry, and copywork (selections from our memory work of poems, hymns, and scriptures), do I really need to do PLL as well? Is PLL meant for a 2nd or 3rd grader that isn’t doing other poetry, picture study, or copywork or is it meant to be done in addition to CM weekly subject suggestions for that age range? I have also read that many do this book orally, but does this mean it is okay to skip the dictation exercises? Using CM methods, would the dictation exercises in PLL be copywork instead at 7-8 yo? If I use the book, I am considering just using the grammar exercises and skipping the exercises that overlap with the separate SCM poetry, picture study, and copywork curriculum suggestions. Thoughts? TIA

I did PLL with my first two kids and sort of wish that I had not. I don’t think that it was a very good use of our time. If you are already doing those things that are in PLL, then there is certainly no reason to double up or to make things more complicated. (I have five children so I am all about simplicity and effeciency in educating my little ones these days.)

I agree also about the dictation exercies, we skipped those or used them for something else.

I have one child starting in year one this coming fall and have already decided that I am going to do something different with him when he gets to year 2. I would only be using PLL for grammar so it seems pointless to use it just for that. I am still researching gentle grammar options for that age – if i do grammar at all.

We’ve also skipped around the books a bit, focusing on areas that we need to work on and skipping over lessons that are covered elsewhere.  We do cover the picture study ones since they enjoy them (and can stand to improve their narrations).

It’s been a couple years, but I enjoyed doing PLL w/my son.  It was gentle, yet thorough for him (2nd/3rd). We did the picture study. It was short and not a lot of it (and at that time I wasn’t great about getting it in…ugh).  We read the poems but I didn’t have him memorize those. I thought the grammar and writing was just right for him. I can’t remember if he did it as copywork or dictation…but I think either way would be fine…whatever lyour child is ready for. Just my .02:)  Gina

Do you do picture study out of PLL just as you would described by SCM? I think my copy does not have color pictures…

If I were doing a separate picture study (we use SCM portfolios) I would do PLL just as it describes. If I were using just PLL for picture study, it would be pretty basic and I’d ideally want to do it more as SCM/CM recommends. Just what I’d do:)

Can someone spell out what PLL stands for? It isn’t coming to mind for me. Thanks!
