is it necessary to call math, "math" or science, "science"?

I like that homeschooling can be less formal than breaking everything into subjects.  I am kind of stumped though, does anyone have a suggestion for applicable names to call subjects other than the common ones?  I have a kindergartner, so her math isn’t numbers as much as position right now, “math” or “arithmatic” just doesn’t seem to fit our time on this topic.  I’m good with leaving reading alone because we are learning to read.  We use the CM 106 Days of Creation, so I go back and forth between creation and science.  I want to have some bridges between science and creation in her education.

    It’s Creation science.

I don’t know what you do for math, but we use a lot of manipulatives with math for our two children in K.

I call it math/manipulatives on their workboxes. Not very savvy but I understand what you mean. Just take heart that the number work you are doing is laying the foundation for higher math later.

I put Nature Study on our “science” workbox and on their card they flip over when it is finished. That wording fairly well covers anything we do as it usually involves a creature or God’s creation!

    Hope this helps.

This is a cool question. I think if I was going to change the name of ‘math’ it would be to ‘provisions’. I am thinking that all this counting, adding, subtracting, dividing, fractions, time, money, dates, solving….. It’s all about the provisions God supplies. Items, time, money, blessings, things to solve with His help, meeting our needs, it all pours into our relationship with Him and how we relate to Him. just a thought.

A friend of mine is taking her Social Studies subject ( which I believe we Canadians call History/Geography/and a bit of Anthropology all mixed together ), and turning it into Missions this year. They are going to study the history geography and culture of as many countries around the world as they can. I thought it was brilliant as they will be praying for these countries as they go along too!

Hmmm…. Going to give this some more thought… Interesting concept.
