I am interested on thoughts about how late is too late to start formal grammar. My dd will finish ILL right before she turns 13. That is the current plan, antway.

Has anyone else waited this long? Should I supplement with something else?

I was about 30 when I started formal grammar. No lie. I had nearly zero grammar in school.

In my opinion, that is the perfect age.  I wait until 6th grade to start formal grammar.  Your child should pick it up very quickly.

We will not begin formal grammar until Sept and my ds will be 13 in November.  We didn’t care for I’LL.  My problem was there were too many lessons to weed through because we didn’t want use the dictation, copy work or memory work. I wanted to get through it in one or two years max. I may look at it closer for my younger ds who starts 4th in September, but I’m Still not sure we’d use all the lessons.  We tried a few other free online options, but didn’t really get into them either.  I will be looking into some options for this coming year that my older ds can do on his own.

Our Mother Tongue is an excellent option. It even has interesting information about the history of the English language in the side bar. I believe you can find it in the SCM book finder.

    Thanks very much all!

4myboys, let me know what you decide.

TailorMade, why did you decide on OMT instead of AG?

I’ve seem OMT mentioned and I like the samples, but I’m not sure if it will be enough for my ds.  I don’t want to bore him silly with enless practice and review, but it takes a him while sometimes for certain things to become part of his long term memory. We constantly have to review basic math facts, spelling, and grammar rules for them to really stick.

@4myboys: Have you seen Winston Grammar?  It has some cards used in the lessons – I think that it might be a great way to have the re-inforcement of rules as you are moving the cards around.  I know that they are used as you learn to diagram sentences, but I bet it might not be that hard to adapt to other things too.

OMT was our eldest son’s choice. He liked the layout and historical information. I liked the price and the handy answer key. 🙂

Our next two dc used EG+. They were bored by it, but it was a quick way to cover the topic, which is what appealed to them. They also spent a bit of time in ear shot of our 4th child as he studied the Essentials of the English Language (EEL). We took a year off from it this school year as it was quite intense for him at the time. We will pick it up again soon as he is ready to tackle it now. It’s more work than the other choices, but he actually needs the challenge this next year.

We enjoy PLL and ILL as an oral way to discuss these ideas earlier on. It’s quite possible that many children need little if any more grammar instruction after ILL, but I have enjoyed watching our children develop their skills even further with OMT & EEL. Our youngest is a long way from either OMT, or EEL. I’ll have her decide which one seems to interest her most when the time comes.

As for AG, I’ve never seen it and don’t know anyone in our area that uses it. Since I don’t need another grammar curriculum, I just haven’t checked into it.
