Doug, you said Karen did one one of SCM books on her iPad. What program did she use? Is there a Word equivalent for the iPad? Or what would you recommend? I’m finding my iPad is pretty much taking the place of my laptop except for a couple of key areas, typing and printing my documents being a biggie.
Robin, you can get Pages for iPad, but I find I still use my MacBook for any real typing. As far as wireless printers go, iOS devices want special air printers. We have 2 wireless, but neither are air and we weren’t willing to replace them. I found an app called Print N Share that works very well from either my iPhone or my iPad.
I use Pages to create documents. If lots of typing is involved I use a wireless keyboard, otherwise I’ve become quite proficient at typing with one finger. :-)You can export documents from Pages into a Word format.
As for printing, I don’t know how that works except that Doug has a print server set up on one of our other computers that allows me to print from my iPad. Maybe Doug can give more information on that. 🙂
I believe that if you have a printer that is not wireless, you can plug it into your router (if your router is set up like this) and “make” it wireless.
Mjemom, you are right, but iOS devices want something different than wireless, something called air printer. That’s a specific feature on some newer printers. The print n share app is my work around.
gotcha – we do have a wireless/air/e-printer and on the rare occasion I need to print from the iPad all works gloriously 😉 I just know that was something I had heard before that people had done. Before marriage I worked for an author and typed/edited books all day long, I am so used to my keyboard I don’t know that for big typing jobs I could ever convert, so I haven’t ventured there with my iPad, even though I use it all the time!
If your printer is not AirPrint compatible you can run software on a computer that will accept print requests from your iPad and send it on to your printer. The software is called FingerPrint and is available for Mac or Windows. There’s a free trial available.
