I have a iPad now and finally (sometimes) know how to get books to download.  What I am looking for is kids books that have the option to be read aloud.  My daughter is great about sitting with my iPad and listening to the books so I am wanting more!  Cheap/free is best but a few dollars for some good ones would be ok also.  She is 4.5 yrs and my son is 7 who would like to have some of these books.

Me too:)  I found some in the ibooks store by typing in audio books, and it gave me the choice for children’s audio books, usually the free ones are towards the top.  We got a few of Beatrix Potter’s, and some other classic stories.  That’s all I know of right now, so looking forward to other suggestions.

What about librivox? I’ve been wanting to do some of those. Do they work on iPad?

Misty, do you mean simply audiobooks (listen only) or picture books with read aloud option or apps that are interactive picture books with read aloud option. I’ll post some when I know what you’re looking for.

Robin, yes libravox works on iPad. On the librivox site choose subscribe in iTunes. The book will go to your podcast folder. Select it when syncing your iPad and the audiobook will be in the podcast app on your iPad. It used to appear within iTunes but podcasts were given their own app recently.

Librivox is free audios of books that are in the public domain.  This will be collections of things like Shakespeare, history, some science like Thornton Burgess, literature, etc.  They do not have the style of book you are asking about though. 😉

Someone mentioned Sparkle Stories on another thread – it is online reading for kids. I didn’t look it, but wondered if it would work for you.

Most of the books with Read Aloud (iBooks feature for children’s books that audibly reads the book and highlights text in sync) come from the larger publishers. It’s a good bit of work to produce them so there aren’t many that are free or cheap.

Here is a link to show books with Read Aloud in the iTunes store, but I don’t know of a way to sort them by price.
