    Hello,

My 11 year old daughter has bipolar and ocd tendencies which make academics very frustrating for her.  Depending on her mood each day, school may be a breeze or it may rival WW II.  🙁

She does well with very defined boundaries, short lessons, and concrete information.  She does not enjoy reading and often has to be forced to even read 20 minutes a day.  🙁

We have used a classical approach so far – which has worked well with my other 3 children.  However, she really needs something gentler.  Would CM fit the bill?

Is there anyone here using this method with a similar child?  I feel so desperate to want to give her what she needs.  Yet, many days, I feel so helpless.

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to offer.

I don’t have much in the way of advice, but CM is truly a gentle and enjoyable approach to learning.

Would having some of her books be audiobooks help?

    Hugs and prayers for you,

    Heather

I think SCM may be a good fit, but have you checked out the following website

    http://www.nathhan.com/

It is a website for those homeschooling special needs – and may have some ideas.  SCM involves quite a bit of reading and I am sure could be adapted, however I thought I would share the link in case you have not seen it.  Good luck and hope you find something that works well – it may be SCM as it is a gentle approach.  Blessings, Linda

hi– I just wanted to chime in here.  I also have an 11 year old daughter with OCD and quite severe anxiety-except she loves to read.  It has been quite challenging with her as some days, her mind just can’t concentrate.  With the addition of visual problems last year, by some standards, she is behind in some subjects:  math, writing, grammar.  I have had to adjust my expectations(her older sister is far ahead of her peers)This year, we tried a bunch of “boxed” curriculum with CM flavor and those didn’t work-so we ended the year with just CM stuff that i could incorporate. She has grown ALOT when i took the pressure off and used mostly CM methods.  She has begun to do written narration without complaining!!  Next year, we are using the SCM guide and going mostly if not all CM.  When i did artist study with all the kids, they LOVED it-we named our ferret after an artist.  So….long story short is i am convinced that CM has and will continue to provide her with the gentleness she needs, yet will be “enough” academically.  Itc can be challenging and i struggle not to compare her with her other brothers and sister-yet i am convince that this is the best for her-AND the family!

good luck and welcome to the boards!
