DS has his birthday on Sunday and all sorts of presents are coming in the mail from our long distance family. My sister sent a book called, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” I remember last year DH and I saw the movie and I thought it was super depressing and not fun at all. DS is in 2nd grade and an advanced reader so the difficulty isn’t an issue, but I’m not sure about the content. Anyone read this or had their kids read it? Or anyone NOT read it and able to tell me why? Twaddle? Inappropriate content?
“There are a couple scenes and pictures in the book where he is depicted stealing food because he’s an orphan. He also steals wind up toys for parts to fix his automation. He gets caught stealing from the toy store, so the shop owner has his help around the store. I loved reading this book.”
That is what my dd had to say. She went on to elaborate that Hugo makes lots of different things she didn’t want to give too much away about what Hugo made because it would spoil it for you before you reached the end!
She has read a couple more of Brian Selznick’s books and really likes them. She is artistic and that is why they appeal to her. She says there is nothing bad in the books (other than the stealing but he does get caught), and your son won’t be corrupted in any way by reading it.
FYI – my dd is 16. she first read it a couple years ago and rereads it every so often.
We loved this book. My youngest was probably about 2nd grade when I read it aloud to them. It is a great story. It is a bit of a mystery. There is suspense. A sensitive kid might be scared I guess.
