I am new to this board and to CM. I will be home schooling 2 boys grades 4 and 5 next year. Actually we will be doing a little school through the summer to keep them busy. The boys have been in a Montessori program for 4 years but we are very unhappy with the socialization they are getting and also because my 8 year olds teacher seems to have singled him out because she DOES NOT like his sense of humor. Odd, I know, but that seems to be her only complaint. She has repeatedly stated he is immature for his age, (he is 8) and that his sense of humor is too sophisticated. LOL. My son is living proof of genetics, he is just like his grandfather whom he as never met, but seems to have the same knack for jokes and story telling. So, through a year of research and study, I found CM and have read everything I can get my hands on and now CM feels like I have found my way through the home school maze. CM for my family fit’s the philosophy of learning that I believe so strongly in.
My questions are, I have Simply Grammar and planned on starting it late this summer when we start home schooling. But I also really like LLATL, can they be used at the same time? Do they need both or should we complete SG then move onto LLATL? Once they complete the SG we are done for awhile right? I promised them that they wouldn’t have to circles nouns all their lives. LOL
Regarding science, I wanted a gentle introduction so I have chosen 106 Days of Creation. With the creation book, was it intended to be used in conjunction with Considering Gods Creation? It looks as though they are to be used together.
I am so thankful for this site and all of your words of wisdom and support of one another. Any suggestions and advice you give me is greatly appreciated.
I can’t answer to the LLATL and SG question but for the 106 days I can : ). For the ages you have, you would use Considering God’s Creation with the 106 days of Creation. There are a few other books used with 106 days also. You should be able to download a sample of the 106 days off the SCM homepage and find a resource list. Then you can check if your library has them or if you want to buy them.
I have not used the grammar supplies you are referring to so I can’t answer those questions, but I’m sure someone can/will. Rebecca answered the other like I would have, so I have nothing to offer, but a hearty, Welcome, and I have found this site to be an invaluable resource to my home school as well.
Welcome Becky! Glad you’ve made your way to SCM boards. 🙂
Personally I would not worry too much about LLATL in conjunction with SG. You can always add that next year without harming your kiddos in the least. Or if you decide that you really would like more after starting out with SG, you can add it in a bit later. Either way you won’t overload yourselves as you start out and have the freedom to add more in as you feel the need.
Simply Grammar and LLATL are both very gentle programs. If you like them both, you could use them together but there will be overlap. Don’t burn yourself out by trying to do too much, but doing them side-by-side for a bit may help you to “test drive” them and find what works well for you and your children.
