    Hi from Illinois,

I am a mom to 4 beautiful children, the oldest being 26, the next one 17, an 11 and 10 year old, and now a grandma :), I am very new to home schooling, but several friends do home school so there will be lots of support.

After listening to a year of how my son doesn’t pay attention, can’t sit still, playing with his fingers and other issues, my husband finally let me bring him home!  I’ve tried for a long time for him to let me but he didn’t think I could do it for various reasons, the biggest is I have ADD so getting things done are a challenge for me.  Yes my son has that also along with a little HD with it.  He is a very hands on learner, touching, feeling, questions OMG the questions.  I am currently doing the curriculum Five in a Row. He loves the Unit Study approach, but I feel that he would get so much more out of the CM approach.  I have adapted some of the approach without even knowing it.  We do lots of copy work, dictation and narration, we do notebooking on the topics which he really likes so we work on penmenship all the time.  We go on nature walks all the time and he will write in his journal and even draw what he sees 🙂 My husband has told me that this home schooling is my baby and do what I feel is right.  I am really leaning towards SCM.  I like the simplicity and flexibility.  I have discussed the CM approach with my husband and he feels it would be a good fit and variety for my son. (he tends to need lots of variety)

He will be entering 5th grade, I am using the math program which is web based ALEKS, they do an assessment (which we are going to have to work on him to meet state standards for Illinois, our public system is not the greatest) but I like how they teach the topic and it is very visual.  I guess my question is since we are starting in the middle of some of the studies will I have a problem?  His public school teacher suggested “Shurley Grammer” has anyone heard or used this?  Do you think I’ll have any problems adapting?

My daughter who is 11 but in the same grade has an expressive/receptive language disibility and getting special education support and will start speech/language therapy in school next year so we decided we would keep her in as long as the school is cooperative with us about her education.  Plus I’m not sure I can teach her as hard headed as she can be about some things.  But I do hope to be able to home school her at some point.  For now I am focussing on my son.

Ok I’ve rambled enough, I’m still going through the message boards looking for similar questions.  Oh one final question I am attenting the ICHE conference in June, will someone be there from SCM for vending and available for any questions I might have?

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome, Debij!

I have been homeschooling in Illinois for almost 15 years. I’m not sure if you are aware of this or not but under Illinois law you do not have to do standardized tests or meet state standards. Your home scool is considered a private school and you are free to set your own standards. So, for your son’s math you don’t have to worry about what the state standard is. You can tailor math and any other subject to your son’s needs.

Doug and I will have a booth at the ICHE conference. Feel free to stop by and we will be happy to help answer your questions.

Karen, where is the ICHE conference, I am in SW Illinois near St Louis – is it anywhere near there?  Linda

The ICHE Conference is in Naperville, IL about an hour for me.  If you are by St Louis then about a 6 hour drive for you give or take some time :(.  There are some really good workshops this year for working with ADHD children and those who are LD/special needs.  I plan to take those, there will also be a couple of CM workshops that if time permits I’ll try and sneak into.  I hope it helps.  if you go to http://www.ICHE.org the information on the workshops, guest speakers, directions, etc are all on the site.

Thanks Debi – that is a bit far for us at the moment because of my daughter’s illness, maybe next year we can make it.  Would have been nice to meet some fellow Cmers.  Thanks for the info.  The website is very helpful for the future.  I guess the Missouri conferences are better for me if they are in St Louis which is about 45 minutes away.  Linda

    Linda,

I just moved from O’Fallon, IL.  Are you near there?  The homeschool group, SCCCHE, has a contact number for a lady who is very helpful in working with LD/special needs.  We used her to figure out the problem we were having.  Contact me if that is where you are and I can give you her name and number.  For my LD children, pure CM techniques have maid all the difference in the world!

Hi, yes we live in O Fallon, but I did not join any of the local groups because with my high school age daughters and the illness my daughter has been struggling with there has not been time.  We missed a a year of school due to a hurricane and then with illness and having to be overseas for my parents, more got missed, so we cut all extra curricular and meetings to focus on just getting done.  We are doing an extra 2 years, because my daughter is now quite ill and that is consuming all our spare time.  I don’t have a special needs child, just the twin girls who just turned 18.  Tomorrow for example we have to be at the hospital to see a hematologist, because my daughter’s blood has stopped clotting and even a blood test needle stick has been bleeding over a week now.  I am sure you can imagine that is where our focus is and then when we are able we try and catch up and have a little down time with the family.  I wish I had known you were here, it would have been fun to say hello.  Were you here with the military?  Linda

Yes, we were there with the military.  I’m going to PM you.

Look forward to hearing from you.  It is a small world.
