I recently aquired the student book (4/5), and I am wondering if I need the Teacher Manual to use it effectively. If not, I may start now, but if it works better (or only) with the TM than I will wait until I can purchase that, too.
We previously used HOD, but I never used DITHOR. From what I looked into, the student book is mostly graphic organizers, while the teacher’s guide has the lesson portion. You could do it with just the student book, but you’d be missing the bulk of the program.
You definately need the TM. I used it for a 9 yr old boy and we didn’t like it. I found it to be busy work. We chose corresponding books that were suggested by HOD for each genre but sometimes it was hard to answer the questions in the student book based on the book he was reading. I just ended up using the book to teach him the elements of each of the 9 genres of stories but skipped most of the student sheets.
I totally agree with sltress. You need the TM and it’s totally busy work!! We are currently using this with dd age 9. She only has two genres left and we both can’t wait to be finished…LOL. The book lists are good and I really like the idea of exposing our children to different genres, but we prefer to read and discuss rather than fill out worksheets and graphic organizers. Also, many of the suggested activities are for classroom or group settings.
With that said, I do really appreciate the Heart of Dakota Book Shop http://www.heartofdakota.com/bookshop.php You can search books by genre, age, and reading level. There are many wonderul suggestions. Our dd has really enjoyed the books she’s read so far.
