That’s a great site. We’ve used the spaceweather.com site to watch for the international space station to fly over. And one of my sons really enjoys watching for the flash of light during the day when irridium satelites fly over.
Spaceweather also tracks solar activity that can spark the auroras (northern lights) and they have a gallery of beautiful pictures of them.
Regarding telescopes, it’s important to do some research and learn the things important to look for in a telescope. Otherwise, you’ll end up with one that is so frustrating to use that the whole family will lose their love of using it. Here are a few good articles.
