I’m having a hard time finding “gotta-keep-reading” early/easy reader books for my 8yo ds. Any suggestions that’ll really capture his attention & cause him to not want to put the book down?

    Thanks! 🙂

This suggestion is probably very twaddly, but here goes:

Years ago, when I was working as a children’s librarian, a mother came in with the same problem. She wanted a book that her 8-year-old would read. (He had to do a book report). I suggested “The Seven Treasure Hunts” by Betsy Duffey (check the spelling of the last name). It worked; he read it in one night.

The Childhood of Famous Americans series

Any of the books for his age group from Yesterday’s Classics; including the Reading Literature actual ‘readers’. YOu can hunt them down on the Baldwin Online books site, so as not to read them all. There are a ton of great ‘boy’ stories on there.

My 8 yr. old loved The Hobbit, Wind in the Willows; of course I guess that’s not “easy” reading.

He also wanted me to recommend The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh,

Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter, and Complete Thomas the Tank Engine Stories (the original ones). That’s what he told me to write.

    E.B. White stories

    Clyde R. Bulla books

    Thornton Burgess books

    Sign of the Beaver

Check out from the library book list books; one is called The Book Tree and the other Books Children Love, for more ideas for the Elementary age.

Hope this gets you moving in the right direction.

My soon-to-be eight year old really likes:

Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans by Edward Eggleston–this one has really short chapters perfect for narrating.

Anything from the Frog and Toad series (his favorites)

    The Beatrix Potter books

Any of the 3rd grade “texts” on early American history from Christian Liberty Press. Many of these books are old story books they made into text books and added questions, but he just narrates out of them.

A Pioneer Sampler by Barbara Greenwood (I think) He really likes this book. 🙂

Ok and for some real twaddle….Horrible Histories. They are just so gross that he can’t put them down. Does it count that one of them is all about Shakespeare with a summary of 10 of his plays?

My 8 yo dd loves The Sugar Creek Gang series – her all time favorite stories for sure!

    Thank you ladies.

My 8yo ds is around a 1st or 2nd grade level of reading. So, some of these might be a bit much for him to tackle alone. All of the independent early readers we’ve found on the library shelves are most definately twaddle and not nearly enough to hold his interest. Hes in the 2nd grade pathway readers. I was hoping for some books that he could leisurely pick up & enjoy on his own with confidence. Thanks again for your suggestions. If you can think of any others please let me know.

    Blessings,

What about the Henry and Mudge books by Cynthia Rylant? Or are they considered twaddle? I can also think of the Arthur the Chimp series by Russell Hoban (same author as Frances the Badger) and the Nate the Great mystery series by Marjorie Sharmat.

I know some of the chapters from the Little House books have been redone for early readers. I don’t know if any of Farmer Boy has been, but it’s worth a shot.

    How about:

Christian Liberty Nature Readers books 1 and 2

    Nate the Great series

Amelia Bedilia (sort of twaddle but good for words with double meanings. My boys found them hilarious)

    Daniel’s Duck by Bulla

The Bravest Dog Ever: True Story of Balto by Standiford

Terry and The Caterpillars or Greg’s Microscope by Selsam

    The Bears on Hemlock Mountain

I keep catalogs from various complanies so that I can look up books on various subjects at various age levels. The ones I suggest are Sonlight, WinterPromise, Christian Liberty and Veritas Press.

This might be too twaddly for you, but there is a series of early-reader mystery books (very gentle mysteries, not scary) by Crosby Bonsall that I remember my kids liking. Here’s a link to one of the books so you can check it out: http://www.amazon.com/Case-Cats-Meow-Crosby-Bonsall/dp/0064440176/ref=pd_sim_b_1
