Is anyone using the SWI level C for high school English? I have my ninth grade son in it now. I’m wondering if you’d consider it a whole class/credit or if I should add to it. It’s not as rigorous as I expected – and I’m not absolutely in love with it, but it has some benefits for us right now. We need the structure. Any thoughts?
Hi Julie, we ran through it, but did not like the formula type writing, we finished the course, but I supplemented with writing other things throughout their curriculum and I used the Write For College book and they used it as a handbook and I made up some lessons from it, which I though were useful for them. We did not go any further with IEW after finishing that first course, because the girls found it really boring and unimaginative, and way too rigid. Hope that helps. Here is a link to the book we have used throughout high school:
I’m new to this forum and your post caught my eye. I recently started using SWI level C with 2 dd’s, 11th and 8th grades and we’ve only worked through the beginning lessons. Both of my dd’s have been doing written narrations for a number of years but we haven’t begun any formal essay type writing. I do not consider this a whole credit/class but rather a part of a credit. I had an older son who attended high school and his 9th and 10th grade English classes devoted a 9 week quarter primarily to grammar and composition. The rest of the weeks were devoted to literature with writing assignments. My plan is to focus on this 3 days a week until we’re finished. Like you, I like the structure and am hoping this will help my dd’s to feel confident as they learn more formal writing.
I don’t like the formulas but I do like the structure. Thanks for posting. I’m not sure yet where I’m going with it (to add on), but will try to figure it out this wknd. I want to do some college prep/study skill stuff from College Plus – speed reading, writing and study skills…but I’m not sure it’s wise to do the speed reading yet b/c he’s not a very advanced reader yet. On the other hand maybe it’s just what he needs.
