Independent work… really?

Hi all!  I have a question re: independent work with a 6/7 yr old.  I have a preschooler who needs attention, too, but what is realistic for a 6/7yr old?  Our math program (Bob Jones) doesn’t seem to lend itself to working the concepts today and then a worksheet tomorrow (and maybe that’s one of the issues), so I’d like to hear what others in similar situations really do….

    Thanks so much!

Well, I’m using “workboxes” to setup what is happening…. and my preschooler has “workboses.”  Most of her boxes have activities she can do on her own (puzzles, colouring, painting, playdough) – and many are things she doesn’t get to do at other times.    She generally does the boxes, or finds some dolls to play with….  (Oh, and the toddler is either in a high chair colouring/doing playdough, or in the playpen with toys).

However my 6 year old son has a couple of workboxes that he can do on his own….. they are things like…. puzzles, drawing practice, mosaics, or the leappad (very occasionally) – and during those boxes, I read to the preschooler or do something else with her.    It might not be regular schoolwork – but it is independant work, and gives him a little break too.

Great ideas, Suzukimom.  Thank you for your reply!  I will try these on my 7 year old … it sounds exactly like what he might need.
