DS6 has been reading since he was 4, and currently reads at about an 8th grade level, I’d guess. He has been doing some independent work for probably about a year on a basic level. Currently he does copywork, math workbook/activity, and assigned reading (alternating days between Nature Reader 3 and Minn of the Mississippi). After he does his assigned reading I have him tell me what he read about to assess comprehension and he does well with this.

We have been doing history together for awhile now, and when he turned 6 we started doing more formal narration. We are reading through Landmark American history books, with the thought of covering american history over 1st and 2nd grade. Well today he tells me that he doesn’t really like it when I read history to him and he’d rather read it independently. I trialed it today (had him read 4 pages and narrate, then finish the chapter and narrate) and he narrated about as well as he does when I read aloud, though it was much quicker since he read silently. I talked to him about eventually having several assigned reading books per day and then narrating them to me later on, and he seemed agreeable. I guess I just feel like he’s still so young! Should I push it and make him let me read it to him, or let him read it independently? He loves history, and reads a bunch of other history books for fun (I get books from the library using ATTA to get titles). Is there a downside of having an independent learner at such an early age?

I don’t see any real downside.  You may want to consider if you want there to be one book a week or something he needs to listen to to work on ability to learn through hearing – but it may not be a priority for you.

We are still doing literature read alouds at lunchtime and bedtime daily. We also are still doing a geography reading together that he says he enjoys.
