I know my children and they will not go out of their way to look up a word that is unfamiliar. They will just skim over it. We do not use a formal vocabulary program (nor do I want to), but I am looking for creative ways to ensure that they are understanding the words that they are reading short of me prereading absolutely everything and guessing at what they do not know so that I can ask them. So…whatcha think?

    Thanks,

    Cindy

    Hi Cindy,

How about a game that teaches word roots? I have my two oldest play Rummy Roots each week and am noticing that they are picking up vocabulary this way since so much of our language is based on the roots.

That’s a good idea, Rebecca. I have the Rummy Roots and I was planning on using it (I think that’s one of those things I’m always planning on using but…). How about words they come across and they would not be able to decipher it unless they looked it up? I guess I’m thinking that even if we’re not going to use a vocabulary curriculum, there still needs to be growth in that area. I know that our children are picking up lots just reading the words in context, but I’m noticing that in their conversation, they can be going farther in this area. I guess it’s a matter of accountability when they are reading alone and I was wondering if anyone has a creative way to do this without making it unpalatable.

    Thanks,

    Cindy
