I seriously posted this exact same question a couple of years ago, but I find it so strange that SCM does not offer independent/free reading lists by grade. I know most people pull from AO, SL, HUFI or other lists but I would love to see what the folks at SCM feel are “must reads” by grade.
I always start making my lists and then get overwhelmed because I want to cram it all in or I find that the books I’m choosing overlap with the read aloud lists that I would like to stick with from SCM.
Am I the only one who wants this? I feel so certain in my brain that everybody else must want this info too but I never see anybody asking for it! haha
If you go into the bookfinder, you can pull up a list of great books by grade! I’m not sure if you are wanting something different! Hope you find what you need!
The Family Read-Aloud Literature books are many of our must-read choices. Aside from those, there are hundreds of other great books. I’ve always used some of the published book lists to get recommendations, such as
Jan Bloom’s Who Should We Then Read? volumes
Sally Clarksons’ list in the back of Educating the WholeHearted Child
Books Children Love compiled by Elizabeth Wilson
Honey for a Child’s Heart and Read for Your Life by Gladys Hunt
Liz over at Living Books Library also recommends lots of different titles in her blog posts and book reviews
And as someone else mentioned, you can go to the CM Bookfinder. Search for “literature,” put in your desired grade level, and filter the results to Sort by “SCM recommended.” That will put the books we have personally entered first on the list. Anything with that green “SCM” beside the title is a resource we have entered ourselves.
