Hi all, I am looking for a CM flavored curriculum for teaching LA and Writing. My son is 3rd-4th grade, and I have a 1st grader and a 17 mo old, so I really would prefer something with less mom-involvement. We have never done anything for writing instruction, but I feel it is time to begin at least a bit. I looked at things that Well Trained Mind is selling, and they look good, but I think they might be teacher-intensive. I have used LLATL and I might again, but I think I want something a bit more….well, more work maybe. We do like Rod and Staff English, we are using that and I like it a lot. Just wondering what else is out there, and what others here have found useful. I liked that the WTM things had narration, copywork, writing, poetry memorization, and grammar all interspersed throughout, if that helps. And I like that their writing program would work with it, hand in hand. But I am not sold on it, just giving ideas of what appeals…thanks so much!
Hi, I just wanted to put in my own two cents about First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind. I’m using them right now with my 3rd grader (vol. 3), and we love them. I like how they have all the stuff interspersed throughout as well. BUT, it is very teacher-intensive!!! There is no way a student could do it independantly, unless you wanted to go through and give all the new material, review, and directions first, then make them go back and do the exercises. That would probably be the only negative in my opinion.
Have you looked at English for the Thoughful Child? It is very much a CM approach, and can be very independant as well if you need it to be! I was shocked the other day at one of the lessons which I thought would be more ME involved, and how DD was able to go through it on her own, and learn what the lesson was about, then narrate to me what she learned. It is listed in the CM booklist, if you are wondering more about it. =)
