It’s been a while since I have posted here. Some may remember my previous posts about my daughter’s educational struggles. She is now 16 and considered 10th grade, but working on a remedial level. She has made some progress in certain areas since I have last been here, but learning math remains a serious need. The neuropsychologist I took her to several years ago said to table facts and just teach concepts and let her use a calculator. She know how to use a calculator for basic operations. I just need to find practical ways to have her use that skill along with other skills needed for life.
We have used some workbooks, such as Menu Math and Grocery Cart Math. I am planning to order Math Connections to the Real World. I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas for resources I could use. There is another book called Real World Math, but even that covers areas of math that my daughter doesn’t understand, such as fractions and decimals, percentages, pre-algebra, and statistics. She does understand what fractions are, but would not be able to change fractions in a problem to make them LIKE, and she cannot make the connection between fractions and decimals. So, I need to focus on basic math pertaining to skills she needs for independent living.
I am open to consider any recommendations in this area. I am really struggling to get math accomplished this year. I have her do cooking for math and we have worked with money, but I really would like to have a book to follow. I found a book called AGS Life Skills Math by Jacobs, but I can’t find samples of it. I want to make sure it is something we can use before I spend the money on it. That has been my downfall….buying books and then realizing they are not going to work. Any thoughts or recommendations?
I don’t have other ideas for resources but have you asked the library if they can get an inter library loan of the Jacobs book so you can evaluate if it will be a good fit? Last year I was able to get an inter library loan of the 2 algebra books I was deciding between. It was so nice to have the actual books to look through rather than just a few sample pages!
pangit, Thanks for the idea. I will check with our library.
I have two books in my Amazon cart, so it will give me a little something to do with her for a while. I just don’t know how I am going to cover math for two more years, so I can give her some sort of diploma. She would rather be cleaning and taking care of babies (which I don’t have). She is so much happier when we aren’t doing ‘school’. We’re getting through the other subjects, but I’m at a loss for how to cover math on a daily basis.
HSLDA has a department just for homeschooling highschoolers, including those with special learning needs/requirements. I wonder if they would have any suggestions on how to proceed. I have spoken with them before and they are a great encouragement and with that encouragement for doing what is best for your child, not about doing what everyone else is doing.
After talking to my evaluator, I decided to look for, not only life skills, but general math practice resources. I just can’t bring myself to purchasing a full curriculum that will only be partially used. I looked in my files and found I still have some downloads of Math Mammoth that I purchased a couple of years ago. This will give more practice in multiplication and division, even though she needs to use a calculator. I also ordered 2 books through Amazon which cover money math and real world math. That will help keep her busy for a while. But, any other suggestions will be appreciated.
