Hello! I’m Tracie and I have two boys who are 5 and 6. We are finishing up our first year of homeschooling….Kindergarten for my oldest. When I started last year I was all about the WTM Classical method. We were using most of the the Easy Classical recommendations. Well, here we are at the end of Kindergarten and it’s not been at all what I expected and at this point we are doing math and reading every day and that’s it. Both of us are bored and tired. It feels like I am so overwhelmed about what I “should” be doing that we end up doing nothing….that just isn’t going to work!
So, on a recommendation I started reading about Charlotte Mason and eventually found my way here! 🙂 I’m liking what I’m seeing and have decided this is the way we are going next year. My youngest will be Kindergarten and it feels like this method will work better for combining both boys and just work better all around. I’ve already made up my weekly schedule and am making my book list. 🙂 I’m excited! For the past couple months I didn’t know how I was going to keep going next year and was starting to dread it, but with a new plan and a renewed excitement I know we can do it. 🙂
And I have to say this message board is wonderful. Very different than other homeschool boards I’ve been to. Everyone seems very supportive and non-judgemental about other’s choices. I look forward to learning more from all of you! Thank you!
My boys are 5 and 2 and we will be doing a K year this coming fall. This is an awesome forum and I am so blessed to have found SCM early on in our homeschooling journey. I am looking forward to hearing about your up coming year.
Congratulations on finding CM so early in your homeschooling journey. On the main page there are several free e-books that you may find helpful, as well as, the All Day Seminar and Planning Your CM Education.
And, I agree, this forum/website has been the best support for this method and homeschooling in general.
Nice to meet you, Tracie. Welcome to a wonderful site, that as you said, is like no other. This is the only forum I am on and the members here are always very caring and respectful. They have been a huge help to me the past year. This is our 3rd year homeschooling and we started with Sonlight. I am not pure CM, but I have not found a resource on SCM that I have not liked. There is lots of encouragement here about everything from homeschooling to household hints.
I stated homeschooling our two boys age 11 and 7 this past year. It’s been quite the learning curve, but I am so blessed that I found this sight right off the bat and we’ve been loving the CM approach (though it sometimes feels like we can’t possibly be doing enough 😉
I envy your oppotunity to start right from the beginning with your boys without the taint of PS! Enjoy!
Hi Tracie — I came to homeschooling through the WTM method as well – I still find the wtm materials inspiring, but when I found CM I knew I had found my learning home. So easy to get started – just open a great living book and start reading!
Welcome, Tracie! My boys are almost 6 and almost 4 (1st and preschool next year). It’s nice to find someone in a similar boat as myself. I’m a rather eclectic, but mostly CM educator. We’ll be doing Module 1 next year, some Outdoor Secrets and 106 Days of Creation, and other things, too. I’ve been blessed by seeing how simply CM can be implemented – I needed some simplification after WAY overplanning my son’s kindergarten year.
Hi and welcome! I researched homeschool methods and loved the idea of Charlotte Mason, but then people at church gave me free workbooks/textbooks and that’s what we did when my kiddos were 5 and 4. We all were miserable. I went back to my notes and remembered CM, found this website and haven’t looked back! We love the way we do things now, school is short so we still have plenty of time for play. They are 7 and 6 now, about to add a couple more kids in the mix this summer, and I’m thankful the 5 and 4 yr old won’t have the same boring, frustrating experience the first two had with me:) This website has been a wealth of information, and wonderful people to give advice to me. Have fun, and enjoy the ride with your two blessings.
Welcome Tracie! I am pretty new at HS, too. I started last summer with DD7 and we will add this summer DS 5 to it. This board is very helpful and wonderful, and so is the whole SCM website :). Hope you find here what you are looking for.
I really am excited about this. My biggest hurdle will be my own mind….getting past the “way I did it” and all that. I was really good at school, good test taker, loved things like diagraming sentences and SRA’s and since I loved all that it feels like that’s the way it has to be. But my boys are not me and that is ok and the older they get the more I realize they need to enjoy their childhood and I don’t really want their childhood to be stacks of workbooks or being discouraged by tests.
Thank you again for the welcome! I look forward to getting to know you all!
They can still diagram sentences (my 13yo is), but just not at 5 and 6, LOL. The best thing you can do now is read a gazillion books to them and start nature study. That is what I would do if I could start over….and read, read, read up on CM’s ideas and have fun with my dc.
But, hey, that’s just me.
BTW, welcome, this is a great place to learn and grow.
