Okay, folks….this just has me shaking my head. Mind you, my 13-year old daughter has an e-reader, one of those spiffy new Kindle Fire gadgets. (Dad loves to buy her pricey electronics for Christmas.) But this just leaves me incredulous.
I just read a “wanted” post on our local Freecycle board. Someone is asking for an e-reader or tablet for their grandson. They said that he has been constantly sick and has missed school…..so his Head Start teacher says that if he had something like an e-reader or tablet, his classwork could be loaded onto it and he could keep up with things.
Um, am I missing something here??? Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Head Start a preschool program?!! Okay, that explains why my kids are not ready for college at ages 11, 12, and 13….because, obviously, THEY FELL BEHIND THEIR CLASS AT AGE 4 DUE TO HAVING MERE PENCILS AND CHEAP “SHAPES AND NUMBERS” PAPER WORKBOOKS PURCHASED AT A LOCAL DISCOUNT DRUGSTORE!!!
And shame on my children’s mother for failing to realize that she couldn’t possibly teach them since she, herself, was obviously ill-prepared for kindergarten 47 years ago, entering said classroom having only been taught to read by (gasp!) an 11-year old sister who was just “playing school” without a Kindle, Nook, or iPad in sight! Oh, the suffering, the torment, the oppressive life of a preschooler denied an e-reader or tablet…..
I think perhaps I’ll post a request for a Kindle….Wanted: E-reader for a 52-year old woman who never learned how to properly chew on the edge of a coffee table due to confinement under a steam tent while suffering from pneumonia at age 2. Her therapist says that if we load how-to books about wood repairs onto it, she can view photos of what a properly gnawed coffee table should look like. And, after that, her therapist says she can download “The Complete and Concise History of the Hit Television Show, Desperate Housewives” for her e-reading pleasure. This also would be beneficial to her, as she has never seen the show and therefore has no idea of why a housewife would want to be considered desperate. Her life cannot go on in this uneducated manner….
Don’t you know Sue, this is progress. Our generous government making sure no child is left behind, and we have the honor of paying for these programs with our hard-earned money. Maybe one day our money will buy these ereaders for this much needed preschool program.
Makes me too mad to think straight….I have seen this nanny state in England and Europe, trust me you don’t want it here, fight it while you still can…….Linda
Unfortunately the eReaders for 4 year olds do not result in better educated children, just look in a todays Middle School. Ask kids there where Australia is and they ask you if it is the 57th State. Don’t worry and keep doing what you are doing:)
Speaking of No Child Left Behind, I saw one of those heart-warming news reports on the local tv news last night showing a 4th grade public school class holding an indoor garage sale at their school. The teacher was just raving about how this was helping them learn how to make change, and thus preparing them for the OAA’s in April. (OAA = our state standardized testing)
I nearly pulled my hair out. Isn’t anything the schools do these days not specifically designed to prepare them for this one annual test? Until recently, my kids loved to set up a “store” in the living room. Good thing I didn’t remind them, “Now, kids, you know this counts as math practice!” They might have put away the oatmeal boxes and peanut butter jars in favor of having FUN with the Wii instead.
Oh, and I’m not actually picking on the teachers. Obviously, when you are an educator (myself included), you are always looking for teachable moments and unique ways to present a subject. It’s just all of that constant ‘the test, The Test, THE TEST!’ drivel that I’m tired of.
And the sad thing for those teachers who really do care…their jobs depend on those useless tests so their hands are tied when it comes to actually giving their students real knowledge. Thankfully we don’t have to take those tests here.
And Linda, I’m right there with ya. I’m afraid we’ve already lost it in many ways. I know of many people who would be thrilled if the state would give their 4yo an ereader along with everything else.
Robin, I guess those of us who still value freedom and do not want a large socialist (or worse) government need to stand and be counted and make it count in this up coming election….it is very hard to get rights back once they are gone and I fear our children will grow up in a country and world very different to what we envisioned. The assault on Christians and people of all faiths is very worrying – I personally think that if the government can pass rules that make it hard or impossible for Christian charities to do their work and help people, then those people in need will start begging the government for help, and the government will have won because that is what a socialist/communist government wants – dependent people. This is the end game I am very much afraid is coming and I plan to fight alongside all people of faith to make sure that this does not happen. I read yesterday that in the UK prayer in council meetings is now forbidden because one atheist started complaining….we need to keep our eyes wide open, because at the end of the day, even those rights that we think don’t directly affect us, will in the end…trust me socialist/communist governments will not allow homeschooling to stand, so on that alone – we need to be heard.
It’s too bad that those people don’t seem to realize that with everything they “get,” they are usually giving away a bit of personal freedom. There is always a price to pay when we accept things from the government.
My husband no longer has his medical insurance mostly paid by his company (he’s now on disability), so he has to pay a rather pricey COBRA payment to keep insurance for himself. (He won’t be eligible for the government-paid coverage for two years.) Thus, the kids and I have had to enroll in the state plan. They constantly bombard us with notices advising us to schedule well-care visits with their doctors and to have the kids vaccinated (including Gardisil). I’m not one to take the kids every year if they are relatively healthy, but they keep warning us that if we don’t schedule visits, we might lose our coverage. I’m not sure they can do that, but you never know.
