We’re using the SCM guide for Greece next year. I’d like for my 8th grader to read both of these and this is her last year studying Greece but don’t want to overwhelm her. I own both of these and also own Black Ship and Wanderings. Since the younger versions are what’s scheduled for her age I’m inclined to just follow that. But would you recommend still reading the originals later? Or have your 14yos read the originals without much trouble? My other thought is to just read The Odyssey this year and The Iliad later. She’s not a super strong reader. Thanks for any input! Blessings, Gina
If she’s not a super-strong reader, I’d say the Sutcliff books now and another translation for high school. I think it will be beneficial for her to have familiarity with those stories now and not wait.
Also, not only could she surely read those two by Sutcliff, but also In Search of a Homeland: The Story of the Aeneid as she enters into the establishment of Rome.
Hi Gina – I am agreeing with Rachel about the Sutcliff.
Also, though, on the Heritage History site, there are two books by Alfred Church – one is Illiad for Boys and Girls and Odyssey for Boys and Girls. They are aimed at 4-8 grade kiddos. They would also help her become familiar with the story.
I am seconding In Search of a Homeland: The Story of the Aeneid as she enters into the establishment of Rome. It’s an awesome read! (I enjoyed the illustrations too.)
Thank you both for the suggestions! Probably best to wait on the original or I’m afraid she rally won’t enjoy it at all and it will be a struggle. And thanks for The Aeneid suggestions, too. I have the original biut don’t think I have that one. Thanks very much:) Gina
