If you were doing module 4 with…

If you were doing history module 4 (Middle Ages, Renaissance & Reformation)

with a fourth and first grader, would you

…use books from BOTH grade sets?

…challenge your first grader with the 2nd older group books?

…lighten the load of your 4th grader with the 1st group books?

…complicate things for Mom by doing a mish-mash of both groups of books?

Maybe have the 1st group of books for “school” but use the 2nd group of books for free reading or literature? (I’m thinking, “King Arthur and His Knights” and “The Door in the Wall” would be great bedtime books to hear from Dad, or read-alone books if my son’s reading is that far along.)

    Thanks for any insight!

This is the way we did things and I have 5 from K – 5th grade last year.  We read the family together (obviously) then the 1-3rd (or whatever the cut off is) we read aloud and the older ones 9x out of 10 would sit and listen, then my older ones would read there books independently for there literature reading.  This is my understanding of how to do the books.  I’m sure you’ll get other ideas. I will be doing Module 4 with a 4th and 1st grader when we start this summer.

For the Bible, History, Geo. as laid out in the handbook – I will read all family selections to both and will read 1-3 grade selections to the 1st grader with the 4th grader listening in when she wants to. The 4th grader will read all 4th-6th grade selections to herself. There will be narration all around.Smile

We will have literature read alouds for family, and the 4th grader will have her own. I also have some planned for the 1st grader that he doesn’t remember when we read them before.

You can certainly use any of the history books for bedtime books!

    Thanks for the feedback!

I just wasn’t sure what to do, since the fourth grader will be *just* out of that 1-3 block.  I don’t want to complicate anything needlessly.  I guess I’ll just go ahead and start buying up the books when I find them, and we’ll see what his reading level is by then.

I’m glad it isn’t unheard of to use “history” books as “literature” books.

    Thanks gals!
