We just found 4 Sugar Creek Gang books at a Friends of the Library today. I think they were $1.25. I found about 11 books that I thought were on a list or two that I have and I can’t wait to let my boys read them.
Someone mentioned Homer Price earlier and I have a story to share. My 11yo son has really begun reading for enjoyment (last year or so) and he was wanting to go to the library. I encouraged him to pick a book from our home to read for now. I told him that if he didn’t find one that clicked that we’d go to the library soon. Well, he picked one and after 1 chapter didn’t really care for it, okay, so he picked up Homer Price. I could hear him from his bedroom laughing out loud to himself:) yeah! And, he couldn’t quit sharing the whole book with me, chapter by chapter. Well, he finished the book and loved it. Later, we were talking about older books vs. newer ones, so he wondered what year Homer Price was written. The copyright date says 1943. He was shocked! He says, “I’ve been reading books that are THAT old?” I said, “Yes, but you liked them didn’t you?” He said, “Yes”. And, then he realized that they are older than his grandma:) That really shocked him.
I’m so glad that my son (s) have learned to appreciate good books and, hopefully, as they get older they will make good choices in that area of their lives. My oldest has really begun to understand the difference already:)
This site, in particular, has really helped ME choose better for my kiddos. Thanks everyone.
This is a great topic! I’m pretty new to CM and am in the process of building my home library. My kids are 7, 5 and 2.
I love lots of the suggestions people wrote (Narnia, Little House, Beatrix Potter, Child’s Garden of Verses, AA Milne, etc)
A few others we love are William Bennet’s A Child’s Book of Virtues
Velveteen Rabbit,
Pilgrim’s Progress
Dear Canada and Royal Diaries books
On my wish list are Parables of Nature, Handbook of Nature study, Character Sketches (Institute in Basic Life Principles) and I love the looks of this Aesop’s Fables.
I love days like that… My husband laughs at me because I will actually get breathless before going into a big book sale. But that’s my passion and why I have over 9000 books. Congratulations on your haul!
