please tell me how you have made it fit with the SCM Module’s lesson plans.

(Before I proceed, I must disclose that I am not familiar with much Roman history at all, so this is going to be just as educational for me as for the children.)

I just received my copy of Guerber’s The Story of the Romans today, and in flipping through the first several chapters, I’m noticing that there is extra material. My specific question involves SCM’s introduction to Rome through the story of the twins, Romulus and Remus. However, in Guerber’s The Story of the Romans, Romulus and Remus are not introduced until Chapter 5. While I love the way Guerber sets up the study in Chapter 1, with the geography of the region, I’m not really sure what to do with Chapters 2-4, where she talks about Aeneas, Venus, and Dido.

If you have used this resource with SCM’s Module 3, would you please share how you did it? Did you read the first 4 chapters or just go right into Chapter 5? Is there anything else I should be aware of regarding this resource?

I don’t have an answer, Lindsey, but am interested in your thread. I am planning to use the Guerber books as spines also.

Well, I’m not using the SCM Module but I will be using the Guerber book in our readings of Rome. If I were in your place, however, I would probably just read those 4 chapters before beginning the Module, which starts w/Romulus and Remus.

To me, those first four chapters are valuable in that they give good geography (which you can map), connect with Greece and the Trojans (establish a timeline in history) and give a more thorough introduction to the area; not to mention the famous story of the founding of Carthage!

It occurred to me to handle all the characters/gods the same way we handle Shakespeares characters-write them down as you read to keep track!

    Hi Lindsey,

We used the G. Book last year and still basically followed the SCM. mod. I would not recommend skipping any of the chapters, really, because the whole book is told in story format and so if you skip chapters it is more difficult to understand what is going on in the next chapters. She does a wonderful job showing history as it all folds out and how everything happens because of what happened previously. I now it looks like A LOT of chapters, but they are all pretty short, actually.

What we did was just try to split up the chapters evenly throughout the year and wherever it said in the Mod. handbook to read a Famous Men chapter we read a chapter or two of the G. Book instead. I think we also tried to assign the extra reading material to coincide better with the chapters of the G. Book as well. So sometimes we would have a chapter or two of the G. book and then some of another assigned book as well. It would be so much easier if I could just show you our printed out plan from last year. It worked well. We got through everything that we had planned (first year that that has happened for us!). My dc are around the same ages as yours are, I think. Last yr. they were as follows, dd9, ds7, dd5.

If my explanation is not very clear (which I would totally understand! LOL!) I could type out a portion of our plan in a post to give you an example of how we worked it and also how simple it really was. Let me know if that would help you.

    God bless!

    Hi Lindsey,

I wish I knew how to be able to just show you a PDF of our plans as they were written for the year but I don’t know how to attach anything to a post. But, I will type out a section from the beginning of our year and hopefully that will give you a feel for how things worked.

    Lesson 1 (Bible) – SCM lesson 1

    Lesson 2 (Bible) – SCM lesson 2

Lesson 3 (geog) – select from list (we had resources planned for the year on top of what SCM suggested for geog. So we chose our lesson for that day from the list we put together for the year)

Lesson 4 (history) – Guerber : the first settlers; supplemental book, Growing up in Ancient Rome: pg. 4-7

Lesson 5 (history) – Guerber: The escape from the burning city

    Lesson 6 (bible ) – SCM lesson 6

    Lesson 7 (bible) – SCM lesson 7

Lesson 8 (geog) – select from list

Lesson 9 (history) – Guerber: the clever trick; Growing Up in Ancient Rome: pg. 8-11

Lesson 10 (history) – Guerber:The boards are eaten, The wolf and the twins

    Lesson 11 (bible) – SCM lesson 11

    Lesson 12 (bible) – SCM lesson 12

Lesson 13 (geog) – select from list

Lesson 14 (history) – Guerber: Romulus builds Rome; Growing up in Ancient Rome pg. 12-15

Lesson 15 (history) – Guerber: The Maidens Carried Off, Union of Sabines and Romans

So, that was the first three weeks of our hist/geog/bible from last year. Hopefully you get a good idea of how we did things. If you needed/wanted the whole years plans, I could send an attachment to you via e-mail, but I just don’t know how to do it through the forum. I’m sorry. Let me know if this is enough to help you or if you would like our whole year. You can pm me if you want me to e-mail you an attachment. HTH!
