which book would you choose? I am looking to transform our homeschool from CMInspired to a purer CM approach over the next school year. Where should I begin? What has been your most favorite and meaningful book on CM and her teaching on educating our children? Why?
I’d say a Charlotte Mason Companion for book, it is an EASY read, you don’t have to read it in order, I still refer to it regularly, though I may be biased on this because it was my first exposure to CM.
I think an IDEAL companion to this book is the SCM all day seminar – what a worthwhile set of DVDs to own and perfect for the auditory learner.
With those two resources you’ll have more than enough information to get off to a simple, manageable start without a major time investment.
I agree, I love the Original Homeschooling Series. You don’t have to read all 6 books before you start the method! Volume 1 will get you well on your way.
Original Homeschooling Series is great, but it is 6 books. If I had to choose just one of those books, it would be Ourselves. Otherwise, I LOVE Karen Andreola’s Charlotte Mason Companion as well.
I would agree with many of the others – if the 6 volume original set seems too daunting, I too really liked Karen Andreola’s Charlotte Mason Companion. This is actually the book that got me interested in checking out CM in more detail after another homeschooling mom loaned it to me in a big pile of other books when I was first starting out. I ended up re-reading it 3 times before I finally returned it to her (and took something different from it each time). I’m finally slowly starting to make my way through the originals, but that was my starting point…and perhaps a little easier to refer to if you just want little bits to re-inspire yourself as you go.
So thankful! I have Andreola’s book and I’ve read most of it, maybe all of it, but gosh it’s been a long time. I could dust it off. I think I’ll start on the Original Homeschooling Series. (Bookworm … loved your analogy.) Two years ago I read For the Children’s Sake, and loved it. I think I read Andreola’s after, but again, it’s a blur. Wouldn’t hurt to re-read it before I jump into the six volumes. Oh, LindseyD, thank you for the suggestion on which I might read first.
