what do you use for yourself to be able to guide your students in improving their compositions? Do you use reference books? Do you pull ideas from other curriculum? I am referring to older grade levels. I understand CM didn’t teach a separate composition course, but “pulled out” a point or two from their written compostions to work on, and then held them accountable. With as little knowledge as I have in this subject, I believe it would be easier to give them something like Jensen’s Format Writing. So, mothers of highschoolers, how do you handle this in your home?
I use IEW’s theme based writing lessons by tying them to a topic that we will study for the year. After a few titles in that series I have them go through the Advanced Communications Course.
Both teach the student (and parent) how to edit thoroughly and feel secure that papers have been well planned and written. Both expository and creative writing are covered.

We just got Apologia’s Jump In and the kids are loving it. YES, it is a little workbooky, and YES, I know Charlotte wouldn’t approve :(. But I wanted the kids to understand pre-writing skills like brainstorming, outlining, and how to organize their writing. We still do written narrations. But this is something that I think will benefit them for future writing projects.

Hi 4myboys – I started it with both my 5th grader and 6th grader. They are both really enjoying it and I have noticed (especially with my 6th grader) that she is writing more now that she knows the process of organizing her thoughts.
