DH decided that he would like DD to learn Spanish, rather than French, during these early years. We now live in seminary housing, and today I met a downstairs neighbor who speaks English as a second language. From what I can tell, she and her grandson (the seminary student) both speak fluent spanish. She is home during the day, and I thought about asking her if she would be willing to give Spanish lessons.

I don’t really know exactly what I would be looking for, though, and I am certain she will ask. I think an hour once a week, or two half-hour sessions a week. Is this about right? How much do I offer to pay her? Has anyone had their children learn through immersion/conversational teaching from a friend/tutor who is fluent in the language?

    Thanks!

I’m totally not an expert on this but I literally just watched Sonya talk about this in her All Day Seminar dvd tonight.  She recommended having someone who natively speaks the language spend 30 minutes with the child and early on just teach them the name of things.  I believe she gave the example of teaching them 6 words each time and reviewing previous ones.  Again, I’m no expert, I only replied because I literally just watched this about 15 minutes ago.  I’d be curious to hear what others have to say.

KCMommy, How often did she reccomend learning 6 words?  My husband is fluent in Spanish, so I have my daughter learn “some” Spanish from Dad each week (pretty informally).   Just wondering if we should step it up a notch.  Usually he teaches her a few words that present themselves at the moment.

April, I would think she would gladly help you out.  Why don’t you ask her what you could do for her in exchange?

Here’s a blurb I copied from SCM: Make sure the children hear the language as a living language, preferably spoken by a national every day. Learn about two to six new words daily while still keeping the old words in use. Make sure they are quite familiar with the language’s sounds and accent before they ever start reading or writing it.

    Hope that helps

My 5&6 year olds are enjoying the free Salsa Spanish videos.
