I know Abeka is not CM, but I was able to get a used copy of an Abeka student text 3 on American History (That seemed to be the level that looked like it would not get over my daughter’s head). I really cannot spend more money on curriculum, as I ended up spending extra on Math, because that is really going to be our focus this coming school year, along with reading, due to my daughter’s dyslexia. She is 11 and is still not reading independently and math is even more of a struggle. I was using Heart of Dakota, and stopped that. I really like HOD, but I finally came to the point where I realized, just because it is something I really like, it isn’t necessarily what my daughter needs. I need to simplify. I can’t spend a lot of time on history and science. I need to focus on the 3 R’s this year. I should have done this 2 years ago. But, since I wanted to use HOD, we would end up spending too much time on other things, then I would end up dropping HOD and finishing the year more simply. Anyway, in deciding how I was going to cover history and science, I knew I wanted some kind of guide, but I didn’t want a lot of busy work. So, I got this Abeka history book to use as a guide. I thought about reading a section, and on topics/people I want her to really learn about, get living books from the library on that topic. Not sure how much written work I will have her do in history  I started having her learn the state capitals this year, and I want her to continue that for Geography. Does this sound like a good plan? At this point, I am planning to use AIG for science. I will just read the beginner section, as this will be shorter/simpler with my daughter’s attention and language processing difficulties, and we will do the activites/experiments. I guess I just need reassured about how I’m handling things. I always felt like I needed a full curriculum, and had to ‘check off all the boxes’ to count it completed. I think I am over that now. I just have been second guessing myself about history. If anyone has any other recommendations, feel free to give me your suggestions.
