We have recently moved to an area where there is a beautiful stream right down the hill from us. My high school student is wanting to do a stream study. If he were a little person, I would say, just go poke around and see what you can see. However, for high school…Any ideas of topics, resources to use? Thanks so much!
This may not be what you’re looking for, but the first thing I thought of was taking water samples and analyzing them. No idea how to go about that, though.
I think I would look for a book or two on stream ecology. Also, maybe he could do some research into how a stream in any given area
effects the ecosystem of that area. I also think nerakr’s suggestion of water analyses would be a great idea as well. I don’t have any specific books to suggest right now, but if I come across any, I will let you know. Sounds like he could have some fun with this!
I am planning on doing something like this experiment with my son in high school to investigate the effects of stormwater run-off on streams and water quality. There is a “Bottom-Up Stream Ecology” study that says it is coming soon on this site as well:
