I am teaching a co-op class this year using Lord of the Rings(LOTR)
I will be teaching annotation, literary elements, lit analysis (in the vein of Teaching the Classics), there’ll be vocabulary, reviewing the Ancient and Middle Ages epics (and their impact on LOTR), poetic language, quizzes, tests, and Professor tolkein’s bio
Loosely based on Literary Lessons from LOTR; but no essays, and I’m redesigning a lot and using several other resources
We will have two parties: one on Bilbo’s and Frodo’s B-days (within first semester) and the other on the Gondorian New Year, established by Aragorn (2nd Sem); extra credit for dressing up creatively AND bringing a Middle-Earth dish!
It will be worth 1/2 credit
If the parent wants to make the half-credit part of their English, then fine; but some may want to just simply use this as an elective
So, that begs the question of what legit class name can I recommend be written ON a transcript?
The class itself is called: Literary Lessons – Lord of the Rings & More
Having been a college registrar who reviewed high school transcripts, I can tell you that a simple, descriptive title is best. After all, “English 9” is sufficient for your basic, year-long 9th grade English course, and the credits assigned will indicate the depth covered. For an elective, the title should be a bit more specific but short and to the point.
In your case, I would simply title it “Literary Analysis – Fiction” or even just “Literary Analysis.” You might also write a two- or three-sentence paragraph to serve as a course description and give that to the parents as well. Not all colleges require course descriptions, but they could hang onto that to provide it if the college asks for it.
I know you are looking at the course through the teacher-microscope, but when it comes to transcripts and course descriptions, remember that college admissions officers and registrars are busy people who review many transcripts. They are looking for assurance that applicants have completed what is necessary for admission and for those few electives and activities that make a student stand out for the selection process of program admission and scholarships.
Sue, I have been wondering something and I thought you might have some input on it.
Do you think it looks better on a transcript to have 1 whole credit in 1 year of World or American History? Or would it look find to give 1/2 credit 2 years to complete a year. I’m trying to figure out if I should give the whole credit of American history from SCM two modern histories in the second year that we complete the last one. I’m not sure which way to go, what would you suggest?
