I want to start my 4yr old memorizing bible verses, or I might say he wants to start. I’m no so much worried about how many he memorizes just that I have something he can follow.
What have you done? Also, I’ve heard there is an ABC book of bible verses for children but don’t know the name of it or if the verses are really to long. Can anyone help?
My ABC Bible Verses: Hiding God’s Word in Little Heartsis the book you mentioned, I believe. We have it and like it. Also, I like the foundation and fighter verse cards by Children Desiring God. They are available in NIV or ESV, perhaps others, too. Here is a sample of the foundation verse cards. I like the pictures on one side, esp. for the little guys.
Nanci – I PMed you my email address and would love the information you have.
Christie – YES that’s the book, I’ll have to order it! Also, I LOVE those cards. What is the website to order those? They would be great for my 4 yr old! It is a must have.
We enjoy “Scripture Memory Fellowship”. They have a delightful scripture memory book for pre-schoolers called “ABC Memory Book”. For the younger ones, verses are short, engaging, with beautiful illustrations throughout. We’ve used them with joyfull success! All are KJV.
Misty, I forgot to mention that the Harrow Family has a a scripture memory cd called “Sing the Word from A to Z”. We loved this! My guys memorized the verses A to Z without even trying .
Hi Misty! My 4yo (just turned 5) memorized all the verses that the rest of our family did. I didn’t have any kind of special resource or CD; just the plain Bible. I’m sure my kiddos would have love learning their Bible verses in song-form. I honestly never thought of teaching them that way. My thinking was that I already had a Bible, and that was free so it would have to do. She was barely 4 when we started memorizing, and we learned whole passages, not just one verse at a time. She can now quote Psalm 100, Psalm 23, and 1 Cor. 13:4-8 on her own. We spent about six weeks on each passage, doing one verse per week and adding it to what we learned from the weeks before. I am so glad I taught 1 Cor. 13:4-8 when I did. It was invaluable when trying to teach the habit of kindness.
I say all that to encourage you that you can teach a 4yo without a “special resource.” Not that I have anything against those resources at all; we are on a budget, and I try to use what I have before buying anything extra.
I also think that seeing her as a whole child, like CM teaches, definitely applies to Scripture memorization. Just because she’s 4 doesn’t mean she can’t understand and hide God’s Word in her heart. It might take her longer than her siblings, or less time…you never know! My 4yo out-did her brother several times in this department…although I’ll never tell him that because each child is different!
I second Lindsey. My daughter is 4, going on 5, and we have the same verses she mentioned above memorized too (Psalm 23, 1 Cor. 13, etc). Most of her versus are rather lengthy too. It is funny, when we have a short one she asks “why is that one so short?”. The thing I think that has helped us most is finding verses that matter to us right then. For example, if we are talking about a character quality like self control, I will look up verses on that and have even given her like 3 to choose from and she picks her favorite to work on. When we relate it to our life like that, it soaks right in, no matter how long the verse/passage. And then we can turn around and use it in our daily life when we come across a struggle in that area. They may be small, but they are capable of so much!
thanks everyone for the reminder. I always want to save $$ and I know I could use the verses here on SCM which is what I use for my older boys, but I just was trying to find a more “fun” way for my going to be 4yr old. You have all sent some wonderful informatino and resources. Thanks Misty
We have the ABC book and my 2 almost 3 year old LOVES it. He walks around saying “A kind word turns away wrath” (from the letter A) and a couple of others. I have begun to line it up with our “letter of the week”. We normally read the story at least 2 times throughout the week. Its been a hit so far.
Misty, I agree with the others in having young ones memorize with the entire family. I also understand you wanting to find (as you stated) a more “fun” way for your 4yo. Our oldest is almost 15 and our youngest 3, so we’ve always memorized scripture together – the past few years of which we’ve utilized the SCM scripture memory system. However, in addition to this, when ours were younger and especially when they began to show much interest (like your little guy), I purchased (or made) a “special” scripture memory book of verses just for them. One of my ds’s treasured his book of scriptures so much that he went to sleep with it. Any special ways we can find to aid our children in hiding Gods Word in their hearts, will last for eternity. Blessings to you! ~ Heather
