I want to consider Rightstart Mathematics for my 5yo. son, and possibly my 3rd grade son. My question on this post is concerning my 5yo.son, and at this point I know almost nothing about the program.
Can you describe rightstart to me? What makes it CM friendly? Does it have a lot of writing sheets for the young ones (5/6yos.)? Why do you like it?
Also, I noticed on the web that if you are going to order level A (for example) there are many different package options…..Deluxe set, etc. For you Rightstart users, what do I really need for the beginner package? I would really want to get the most out of the program, so I don’t necessarliy mind buying the “big” package if it is worth it.
We started with Level B, and we did get the required manipluatives. I’m glad I did. As we’ve moved on to Level C, we have added a few more that we needed. It is a wonderful curriculum in my opinion, and we enjoy it very much. I’ve written a couple entries about it on my blog (here and here). This is also another mom’s take on what to purchase regarding Level A!
I started with Level A and did not get the deluxe package. I don’t think we even needed the balance until the very end of the book and my kids understood the concept so well by that time that we were able to skip it. Now that we are fully committed to RSM, I have since purchased separately the Math Games book, another abucus, and the balance.
My children beg to do Math first thing every morning (and I HATE MATH…so this is a testimony).
One bit of advice, I got caught up in worrying about my kids mastering certain concepts (esp the geometry parts) during Level A…now that I am into Level B…I realize that much of those parts in Level A were simply introdcutions. We really love RSM, the only time it has failed are the times that I have failed to be consistent. It does require a different way of thinking (so good for our children) and I only wish that I would have had such an experience in math growing up!
So I am curious, because I am looking into different math curricula for next year… Is RSM taught to a classroom or to an individual child? And are there actual lesson plans all planned out for you (what to say and do every day), or is it more a guide? We are using BJU right now, and while we like the hands-on, it’s difficult to use because of the classroom setting and it’s all right there for you – say this, do that, in this order. Plus there is too much “busywork” IMHO. 😛 It’s also difficult to skip over lessons because of when they add in certain addition/subtraction facts to memorize and other things they do so slowly that it kind of kills the interest, if that makes sense.
We really like RSM and I am NOT a math person! Yes, it is taught to an individual child and the lessons are so direct that they even give you the words to say (which I need on some days!!). Some lessons will have a short work sheet and some do not-maybe 50%. My daughter hates lot’s of worksheets so that is good for us. They offer lot’s of games to play to reinforce the lesson taught but if my daughter really has a grasp of what’s being learned we may skip the games or play it till we are worn out! My 5 yr old will hear us playing a game and having so much fun that he begs to join in!
I also will skip part of the lesson if I feel like she really has it down. I have heard some moms post that it takes them much longer than 20 min per lesson but for us that is not the case. Very rarely have we ever gone over 20 min.
Oh, one more thing, RS does not advocate memorization-not even your multiplication facts. They want you to learn it by doing. And yes, we got the deluxe package and it’s been nice having everything there they ask for in the lesson.
HTH! Shelly
