I would add basic things like grocery shopping and budget planning.
I’ve heard parents say that they had their student take over the family finances, with lots of handholding and direction of course, for a month to see how bill paying works and how much it cost just to live! Seeing the monthly cost of food, fuel, utilities, etc. can be a real eye opening experience!
Lastly, I’ve heard good things about the Stewardship course from Math U See.
Larry Burkett has books and resources for a variety of ages. I think we have one of his books on budgeting, but I haven’t read it yet.
I wish I knew more about interest rates and investments, as well as working with Excell or other spreadsheets. Credit cards are another important topic, especially the way they target college students! My parents gave me many warnings about them before leaving home and I appreciated that.
Great topic! I’ll be adding these into our math lessons.
We did use Math-U-See’s Stewardship course two years ago, but if you do, I would recommend that you purchase the newest version, whether new or used. If you use a version that is too old, some of the material can be a bit dated, like information on cell phone plans.
