Either my dd 5.5 has taught herself to read or has done a very good job of memorizing books. But where do I go from here? I was planning to buy DR or something similar; do I still need to?

Do I use picture books, since that’s what she’s reading, and prompt her for the words she doesn’t know? Do I use the same picture book or a variety? That’s what I’m doing now, and taking over when she wants to stop.

She is a very independent learner. If she wants to do it, she will do it; if not, she just walks away.

I would skip the reading curriculum and just try to read a lot with her. Picture books are fine. I would go for a variety. You could also try books designed for early readers (though some can be quite twaddly). I am thinking of things like Frog and Toad and Little Bear. Picture books don’t always have the easisest words.
