I used narration today for the first time with dd 13. We are using Sonlight. I can now see that our lessons are too long. For history we read 1/2 chap in Story of the World, several pages in George Washingtons World and the Authors note and 2 chaps in The Broken Blade and that was just history. I had dd try narration after the reading in The Broken Blade.

He narration was an accurate retelling of the major events of the story in order with out names and places or detail. It was very breif. Was this good for a first try? Will she begin to fill out her narrations?

We only did one narration today. I am trying to take baby steps. Change is hard for a 13yr old.

I will try this with ds later this afternoon with ds 17. I wonder how his will be?

Yes, that was good for a first try! Narration is hard work and it will take a while before he gets the hang of it. Give him the time!

A hint I picked up somewhere (most likely here) is to write down the names of major people/places in a reading as you come across them. It could be on a dry erase board or just a piece of paper in view of the child. This can help them get specific names into their narration more easily. (And if they don’t want to use it they’ll just ignore it completely…LOL).
