I see there is a Preschool Guide and then Year 1 schedule/curriculum. Where is kindergarten? I’m planning on doing preschool with my 5 year old this year, but then where do I go for inspiration next year (for kindergarten) if not SCM?
Kindergarten is considered part of the early years and is included in the preschool guide as Charlotte Mason didn’t recommend formal lessons until age 6.
That’s right! We weren’t using CM methods when mine were in kindergarten, but even so, we didn’t do much very formal schoolwork until first grade–just reading good books, counting and sorting games with a little informal addition, lots of nature study, etc.
Right. I have a daughter finishing up kindy this spring and she has listened to lots of read alouds (literature, geography, history, nature), done nature study/picture study/hymns, memory work, and a tiny bit of sit down work as she showed readiness. As we finish the year she does 5 minutes of copywork, reads aloud to me 5-10 minutes, and we do different math games/activities several times a week, though we haven’t done math all year as she was somewhat resistant to it.
Ok, so Preschool and Kindergarten are basically the same thing here, just titled “Early Years”?
That’s right. Thanks for mentioning the confusion about where to find the recommendations for kindergarten. We’ve changed the button on the curriculum guide to hopefully make it a little more clear. 🙂
