I am leading an art for young children elective in February and I would like to focus on an artist each week and show pictures of their art, give a brief biographical sketch and then do some art in a similar style. I have art prints but if anyone has a resource for creating art like the “masters” that they love, I would love to hear about it.
Discovering Great Artists by MaryAnn Kohl and Kim Solga sounds like the type of book you’re looking for. There is a brief biography of an artist and then instructions on how to create art in the same medium. A page or two is devoted to each artist.
Dover also sells a coloring book with copies of great masterpieces to color. That isn’t exactly what you were looking for, but sometimes that can be used as a fill-in activity.
Thank you so much! We actually own 2 of the Dover books and I don’t know why they didn’t occur to me to add in as well. No matter how much I prepare for this age group, they always move faster than I think they will!
http://Www.artpeojectsforkids.com has some art murals in the style of famous artists. Last year, we did the Georgia O’Keefe flower as a group after studying O’Keefe. It was lovely!
We have had a lot of fun with The Usborne Art Treasury by Rosie Dickens. It is listed as Art Treasury at Amazon and it doesn’t have a picture in this link:
I plan to continue through this book. It brings some added fun on Fridays and is a quick intro to aspects of art and a variety of artists that we would not necessarily know just through Picture Study.
Forgot something… I was going to add the blog Deep Space Sparkle art projects for kids. It’s a blog by a public school art teacher and she often includes ideas for copying well-known artists. She used to have all her projects on there for free, but now some are for purchase only. Still, there’s enough there for free that you might find a good one to use. Here’s a link
I just checked the Deep Space Sparkle blog and it looks as if there are no longer any freebies over there. It used to be all free, and then last year she started selling some things. It’s still a pretty good deal at $5 for three lessons, but not free.
