Thanks Doug, more good points and thanks Rene for the email info. Doug I would be interested in a little video showing the features and comparing the various items – one of the biggst reasons for having these things apart from loving to read, is its use for CM and in my case for after CM as well – it would be very useful to see the differences. I would be interested in this, also. I’m like Robin and have avoided this kind of technology, but as the kids get older and such, I think the $ invested in a product like this will pay itself off pretty quickly. Thanks, Doug, for offering to do this and for all your insight.
Yes, the experimental browser works pretty good – isn’t accessible in all countries….
I can access my gmail on it – and google calendar, and a bunch of other sites. Some of the google mobile apps work on it, some don’t. I think a lot of the mobile versions of websites would be good. As I mentioned before, SCM Organizer is ok on it – a bit small, but works fine.
Thanks all – I will now wait and see if Doug has time to put a comparison together before I spend my scarce dollars. I do think the technology will pay for itself though, our laptop certainly has with sll the travel we have had to do with the military and now my hubby’s new job – so sometimes they are worthwhile. You need a computer to do the initial setup and then it’s good to connect and sync your data to a computer now and then to back up your data. Other than that it can work independently.
Per my husband who is proficient in all things Apple, and a programmer himself, “The iPad would definitely be the way to go. It’s a great device that has the hardware specifications to last for years when using for leisure or general use. Also, at it’s most basic hardware setup you have the ability to surf the web, email, watch movies (from iPod feature or Netflix ‘Watch Online’ feature), choose from hundreds of thousands of apps in the AppStore, etc. The iPad is extremely flexible for developers to create new and innovative ideas. For example, you can use the iPad to control your computer remotely using apps like LogMeIn, and businesses can use iPads for their employees and push information to the iPad (such as alerts, trouble tickets, sales info, etc.) Schools are beginning to use the iPad all over the world. Many countries have already assigned iPads to each student, and have loaded the iPad with their school books to be used that year. It won’t be long before the U.S. follows that concept. Teachers can also use the iPad as a chalkboard. Whatever they do on their iPad will be displayed on a screen from their projector in the classroom.
Not to mention that you can download the Kindle app for free in the Apple AppStore. That’s enough for me! Two birds with one stone.”
It doesn’t have a cd/dvd slot or sd card slot (or usb slot for adapter), does it? Especially the ability to load my pics for my blog… If it had those items, I’d definitely be asking for one for Christmas!!
Per my husband…again. “It doesn’t have a CD/DVD slot or an SD Card slot, but it does come with a USB cable that connects the device to a Windows or Mac computer for transfers using iTunes. You can transfer images to and from your iPad and computer. You might check the apps in iTunes from your computer now and see if there is an app available that will allow you to upload pictures directly from the iPad to your blog! If not, it may be possible that you can just use Safari (the web browser) to upload images to your blog directly from the iPad. Again, using the USB cable, you can transfer most anything from your computer to the iPad including documents, movies, songs, pictures, etc.”
@tandc93, Besides syncing with your computer, you can also get the optional iPad Camera Connection Kit to connect your digital camera directly to your iPad to load photos. You can work on your blog through the Web browser or there are several apps that will connect to your blog for posting, editing, and uploading photos. I see you’re on Blogger so here’s one called BlogWriter that is one of many choices. For those on WordPress, the official WordPress app is excellent and free.
several of the blogging platforms have their own apps to let you blog right from the iphone or itouch – I assume also from ipad? I use wordpress and they have such an app – it is free, btw. with iphone you can take pics but with itouch (and ipad?) you sync pics from the computer – I keep a folder on my desktop that is set up to sync with the itouch and drop whatever pics I want in there – but there would be a lot more functionality if the thing had a camera
My husband is ready to puchase a tablet for me. I just don’t know what to buy! This thread is helpful, but what does anyone know about Ipad2 versus Ipad3? I don’t want a mini, I think it would be too small. I am hoping the tablet might replace my laptop. My husband has also looked at a Samsung tablet. Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated.
