I just found out that my husband was offered a job in New Mexico-we live in Wisconsin! If all the paper work goes through, we could be moving in August-right before we typically start school! To be honest, I think I am still in shock. I have lived in Wisconsin for 46 years, and all of my family of origin live here. But that is not why I am writing-sorry!
I need some ideas of how to make this work. Do we start school late, after we unpack? Do we do a light 1 sememster or arrange trimesters? Do I try to keep a consistent school schedule right when we get there? I would love ideas from anyone who has experienced this, or even anyone who hasn’t but has good wisdom. I know that God has this all worked out for us, and it will all be good, be nevertheless, I am still undecided about how to arrange the school aspect of the move.
Do you happen to know the NM requirements? That may help a bit. But, if it were me, I’d postpone school and get acclimated to the new surroundings. That’s going to be an education!
If I could (like TailorMade said, check requirements to be sure) I would either plan for a different (don’t say late, then you’ll feel behind before you even start!) start and end date or plan on only doing independent type work so that you are needed minimally. I have moved during scheduled school times and I ended up having to take time off even if it wasn’t planned for just because of the craziness! ; )
I think I would have one special suitcase holding the books you need for that first 12 week term. That way it can go with you and be easily found before, during, and after the move. Have notebooks, pencils, pencil sharpener, math, etc all right in the suitcase.
I think if possible I would make the first half of the term about the move. Geography could be covered in a cross country drive and exploring new surroundings. Lifeskills – packing/unpacking, setting up a house, crockpot meals! I’d decide what we could cover in that manner, and then plan to keep the rest light for the transition time. Write postcards/letters to family and friends for composition. There are a lot of ways to make transitions a rich experience. I think much of that means you will have to let go of the ‘rush to get back to normal’ and allow everyone to participate in the process. Hope I am making sense.
Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions! What is so neat is we found out my husband was offered the job on our 20th anniversayr-which was yesterday! What a great gift from God!
We will be moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico so if anyone knows of anything homeshooling going on there, I would love to know…….
I am not familiar with NM homeschool laws, but I do have 2 friends who homeschooled while they lived in Albuquerque. One family now lives in NY, the other in WA, but the WA family is in Albuquerque for the summer. If there are no other NM families responding here, I could put you in contact.
Did you get my email? I emailed you some questions to help you get hooked up with groups, housing, etc in ABQ. If you didn’t get the email, let me know and I can try again.
NM laws are easy. You are supposed to register throught the Dept of Ed (online is easy). Then do “normal” subjects, 180 days a year. No testing, no portfolios, etc. You are required to have a high school diploma as the teacher.
