    Hi,

I am blending SCM and AO and I don’t think my kiddos can handle to vocabulary in Ivanhoe.  Does anyone know of a worthy book that would be a good substitution?  We will be doing the Middle Ages and reading Joan of Arc, Freedom’s Cause, King Arthur, English Lit. for Boys and Girls, Watership Down and a spine (which I am not sure of yet).  Would love some suggestions.

    Thanks

Douglas Bond’s trilogy? (Duncan’s War is one)

We didn’t get to these books last year, but Beorn the Proud and Rolf & the Viking Bow kept popping up on “must read” lists.  We did get to Ian Serrallier’s Beowulf, which was somewhat gory, but my DC loved it.  All three books are from Bethlehem Books, who also carry several other middle ages books.

My first thought is Men of Iron by Howard Pyle. My daughter really, really enjoyed Pyle’s books and I think Men of Iron is a little more advanced than Robin Hood but not as advanced as Ivanhoe.

The Black Arrow by Robert Louis Stevenson would also be a good choice.
