I really, really need to just stay on this board! Have you ever doubted yourself because you frequented a board that did not hold to the CM philosophy and then wonder why you felt insecure about your choices? I have read books 3 and 6 again and feel so inspired. Finally, I am “getting it”. Even though I have been doing the CM thing for almost seven years I still have the occasional panic attack. I finally get what she means by great books and have found several errors I need to correct immediately, like ditching a couple of books that really are twaddle which I thought were not. Geesh, you would think I would get it by now, but I guess it was because I was intimidated by her books and am too quick to try and CMize a textbook. Blech. Once you get into the groove they really are quite fun to read and so informative.
Off the subject, but I have decided I do not like Wagner operas. My son’s name is Tristan and someone gave us Tristan und Isolda. Funny thing is my Tristan told me to turn it off too. Oh well, maybe we need to break into it slowly.
I hear ya!!! SCM is now the only homeschool online forum I frequent and it is so nice to be able to stay focused on what I know works best for our family. Whenever I find myself getting lured into other programs and fancy curriculums, all of which are fine and good, I begin to doubt and question if I chose the right course. It’s like going to the grocery store without any idea of what to get, I end up wandering aimlessly about, spending too much time and money on things I don’t really need. If I go in with a plan and a list and stick to it with horse-blinders on, then I save time and money and come out with good, healthy food! Mmmm… I’m making myself hungry now!
Regarding Tristan and Isolde – I remember being in school and being taken to see a Wagner opera – if that had been my only exposure or my first exposure, I would have hated opera for ever!! Fortunately mum and dad loved the opera and operetta, and I started with Die Fledermaus and Das Land Des Lachelns (Land of Smiles) which are operetta – I loved those, we used to go see the stage perfomances when we lived in Germany. Then I progressed to Puccini, Verdi and Bizet in my teens and finally onto Richard Strauss and Wagner in my twenties. I love it now, but would not have if I had started with Wagner. So don’t give up, start with some light opera or operetta and find a book to tell you the stories. The Puccini and Verdi operas are generally great tragedies – the operetta’s are more romance and fun. Great name though Tristan, I love that.
Thanks missingtheshire! I love music and opera, but it is mostly “opera-lite” like Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, Andrea Bocelli, etc. I think it will grow on me. I think you have a great idea as far as getting to know the stories first–I would imagine it is a little like Shakespeare, better to get an overview before diving in.
We are Danish/German with most of my family from both sides coming from the northern part of Germany and a Danish island called Bornholm. We needed a good name to go with Johannes which is my husband’s grandfather who came here from Germany. Tristan Johannes just worked. My youngest is Annika and she was so pleased to have a German friend by the same name.
Now if only my husband wanted the kids to learn German. I went to German Lutheran school for all of my education from K to college. I could possibly perfect my German, but alas, he wants them to learn Spanish because we may move to El Paso, TX. Oh well. My years of German have flopped, but it has a soft place in my heart.
Caroline, thanks for sharing, nice to know there are others with German heritage out there, my mother was from the North of Germany a town called Gottingen, and I spent many happy times there and worked there as an adult, which is where I met my wonderful hubby. I too love the lighter opera, Bocelli etc – it is a good intro for the young ones as well. It then makes the heavier operas easier to follow. Knowing the stories really does help follow along, I actually like listening to opera sung in their original language, so it is almost impossible to understand Puccini without knowing Italian, however knowing the story makes it work even without a knowledge of the language and subtitles work as well. I am teaching the girls German because they wanted to learn it in memory of my mother, their Omi and I thought it would be easier, as I already know how! Spanish is very useful over here though that is for sure. When they are older, maybe they can learn some German as well. Anyway, it was lovely to hear about your background and you have chosen wonderful names for your children – blessings Linda
Caroline, I am right there with you! Only I need to stop reading other books more than going on other boards (though maybe a little of that too!) And I need to stop searching for the *perfect* book for topic “xyz”—-is there any such thing outside of the Bible? I just need to jump in with both feet and not worry or look back! (I’ve waded in, and out, and in, and out, and in—-now to JUMP! LOL)
I’m new to hsing, CM style and to this forum. We will be begin homeschooling this fall with a very RELAXED pre-k program, because my 4 year old dd begs to do school work and wants to learn to read. I’ve looked at classical education, but I don’t think that is totally for us. I went to a hs convention a couple of months ago and learned about the CM style and I really feel this is for us!
I have read on other posts about others reading CM books. I guess I’m missing them, lol
Could someone point me in the right direction to the titles, where to find them, etc.
As for the following posts, I need to stop reading other forums too because being new I get easily confused and overwhelmed at all the choices!!!
I gave up looking at all other boards some time ago, they overwhelm, and make you feel inadequate at times. Even when I was not doing the organizer or posting much, I was still reading this forum, it is so helpful and nurturing and does not make you feel terrible if you do things differently to others. This is one amazing group of ladies and gents, and I for one love it. I also love the supportive nature of the posters – it is uplifting and gratifying. Thank you Sonja for giving us all this place to be ourselves.
I couldn’t even imagine frequenting another forum! SCM is my one and only true love- lol. I’m so glad that I have to look no further. We are so blessed to have this community here! I appeciate you all so much and hope to see your shining faces one day.
What a beautiful thought that we will indeed meet one another someday, Heather! In heaven I think we should all share a beautiful picnic with Charlotte and let her know how we all benefitted from her time spent wisely on earth!
This is my only forum as well. I have commented on other “homeschool friendly” sites and have been met with NONE of the wisdom and compassion I get here. Thank you so much for being there for me, Ladies!
Faith 🙂
P.S. I love Rachel’s idea about meeting up in heaven. But maybe, just maybe, it could happen here on earth…minus Charlotte, of course!
