I’m excited but I’m quaking.  My dh and I have talked about a Kindle for a long time, and we always back out for one reason or another.  But I think we’ll keep on wanting one until we just try it.   I’m hoping so much that we love it and find it useful and fun and maybe even that it will save a bit of money.

Any encouragement so I don’t chicken out and cancel the order before it ships?  =)

My Kindle is one of the best things we ever bought.  There are so many free classic books out there.  When I used MEP, it saved me money by being able to read the lessons off the Kindle instead of printing them.

Did you get the one with 3G?  If so, I have even used it to access my online calendar and my email, and google maps when out and about. (no extra charges!)

Love, love, love mine too!  We travel a lot and I LOVE having such library at my disposal wherever we go.  Not to mention all the freebies, and even putting PDF things that I used to have to print onto it – saving on paper and and printing costs. Smile

LOVE my Kindle. I ended up buying the Yesterday’s Classics books when they were on sale and now we have SO many exciting books – my 5YO is using the early readers, my 9YO is reading about Pilgrims, and I just read them a short story about Galileo.

Now I realize, though, that we need more than one. LOL.

I have a ton of freebies from Amazon and Gutenberg, and I love getting the SCM books in PDF for my Kindle, too. (Currently reading Masterly Inactivity again).

Enjoy your new purchase. I have no doubt you will!

Thank you all!  I do feel more reassured.  It seems like we’ve been going back and forth for so long.  I am excited to get started.  I can see how it would be easy to need more than one if we all really love it.  I don’t know how we’ll like it yet, but it’s already crossed my mind that a Kindle would make a really great birthday present for my son when he turns 12 next year.  We don’t have any video games at our house at all or anything other than this rather old computer that I’m sitting at right now.  I told my dh that while most kids have expensive gaming systems ours could have Kindles to encourage their love of books that is already very strong.  Who knows?

Here’s a question.  We are getting a 3G.  If we were to ever get one for our son could we just get the regular and transfer the books from our kindle to his?

Books you nuy from Amazon can be on up to 6 devices.  If you have a wireless setup in ypur house (or if you get another 3G) it would be pretty seamless.    If not you should be able to use the USB cable.

I was wondering is it worth the extra money for ads vs no ads?  Are the ads annoying or easy to just ignore?

    Thanks,

I heard that the ads were just for the screen saver (on the regular Kindle it shows pictures of writers) and a small portion at the bottom of the main page. If I get a Kindle for my DS (9YO) I think I will get the one with ads.

Yes, from what I read there is no interferance with the actual reading of the book.  I went with the special offers so not only was it cheaper, but from time to time they will offer a $1 kindle book, or a gift certificate, etc.  At first I really wanted the no ads, but I’m ok with it now to save money.

So…I have my Kindle!  Actually, I ended up not getting the 3G.  I cancelled the order and got a regular one with special features from Wal-Mart.  While I would rather have the authors and books as screensavers, the special features aren’t bad at all and really make VERY little difference.  It did offer a nice percentage off a case for Kindle already, so I’m going to look into that.

My ds9 is already enjoying a Burgess book, Adventures of Jerry Muskrat, on the Kindle.  I am pretty excited about it.

I have the Kindle that came on my smartphone for free.  This is all I use (for a Kindle) and I love it!  One thing I didn’t anticipate using it for was this:  I stayed at my grandma’s house for a week recently.  I don’t sleep well at other people’s houses and I like to read to help me fall asleep.  I forgot my book at home, but was able to order one on my Kindle and have something to help me sleep!  It was wonderful! I also can read my book with the light off and not keep my husband awake all night.  🙂

I downloaded the 5 Peppers books for free and am looking forward to using it with my children.  I will have it wherever I go, so if we’re waiting at the dr or just a last minute school at the park session, I will not have to remember to grab our read aloud.  I’m excited about it!
