It’s me! 🙁 I have been an avid reader my entire life. My husband jokes that I eat books….each week I go to the library and get another 3-4 books, so I lOVe reading! My most enjoyable Christmas memories as a child are the years I would get a shoebox full of new books 🙂 And I am so proud of our girls, looks like they are following in my footsteps, they love love love to read. The girls and I love the CM approach because of all these fabulous books!!
So what is the problem? Me.
I have the most difficult time reading out-loud to the girls. It’s like my brain skims ahead and my mouth canNOt keep up, I have tried and tried to use any trick I can think of to slow myself down. But I then find myself speeding up again. I lOVe reading to my girls! But often I find myself starting to fall asleep!! This is sUch an embarassing coonfession, but I have nowhere else to turn 🙁 And to top it off– As much as I love the beautiful language within these books, the endless descriptions often leave me bleary-eyed and sleepy. I try to get 8 hours of sleep each night and have no idea what is wrong with me! Any tips or suggestions?
No help here. I can slow down alright, but I do get very sleepy if I try to read after lunch. I can read to myself without a problem, but forget reading aloud. I thought it was just me. No answers here. I just don’t try to read aloud when I know I’m unable. Audiobooks and kids old enough to read on their own are a blessing, esp. After lunch during quiet time.
I actually love to read aloud and prefer it to being read to. Only problem, my middle ds prefers the same thing! We fight over who will read aloud (apparently, we’re both visual).
I do fall asleep after about 1 paragraph when I read to myself, though, it’s my nightcap 🙂
Oh thank goodness it’s not just me! 🙂 Now that I think of it, we usually read aloud right before or right after lunch….could it be bad timing?! I never thought of that before, thank you misceegee! 🙂
We do love the read aloud time, I think I will move it waaay up in our morning schedule, starting tomorrow! 🙂
When I used to read after lunch, before I stopped eating most gluten, I’d fall asleep with the book in my hand sitting straight up…only to wake up an hour later with my kids quietly playing in another room. If I eat bread now, my son jokingly states “goodnight, mama”!
@Heather – I’ve not eaten gluten in 9 months, but I still have the sleepies after lunch. However, the sleepies are drastically worse if I eat too many carbs (GF bread or tortilla or rice, etc).
I get sleepy reading after lunch too, but it is the best time to read b/c my boys are tired and ready for a rest. Sometimes my daughter will scratch my back to keep me awake enough to read, but somedays it makes me sleepier!
I’ve been gf for 15 years, but clEArly something is still having the same effects 😉 You ladies are the bESt! It took me quite awhile to work up the courage and post my dilemma. I thank you heartily for such wonderful support and lack of criticism lol !! I just knew I could count on all of you!
Bethanna– if my dd scratched my back I would probably pass out within seconds! Lol!
Heather–thank you for sharing this! I have fallen asleep just like that on more than one occassion & am actually really impressed that my girls sit and play so nicely when they see me konk out like this 🙂 Little sweeties. Atleast I hope so, ha! 😉
My dh falls asleep while reading to the boys every night. Let me repeat that. Every. Night. I regularly hear yelling from their room, trying to wake him.
I love to read to the boys and never fall asleep. I have no idea what the difference is between us, but it’s just who we are and that’s okay!
Okay, this is probably going to sound weird, but here goes. Try breathing through your nose, not your mouth, as you read aloud. I know that technique stops the yawns, but I’m curious if it will also help reduce the sleepiness. If you want to try it, let me know if it helps at all, please. I’m curious.
