and it is too many books. Right now I am reading through many of the books I have picked up for my son as part of history. We haven’t started schooling yet, but I can’t help a good library sale. What it does do is give me an idea of how long it takes to read a book (me not him). There are so many good books out there how do you get them all in or do you? Do you just outline a general plan and read as many as you can, jumping to the next topic in history if you get short on time.
I never liked history, but am enjoying these reads.
I have a problem and it is too many books to read in a lifetime!
I planned too many books for this year. My revised plan, then, is to enjoy as many as we can. Some books that I planned on reading aloud I’m giving to my oldest to read on her own. Some books I’m trying to have us listen to in the car. Some books I leave in visible places, in hopes that my daughters will pick them up and read them as free reads. And some books go on my “Books to Use Later” list…..
Ha ha. The real problem is not enough bookshelves or room to put bookshelves!
My oldest is grade 5 and I made a book list for him to read the next book when he finishes one. Sometimes he reads more than normal when it gets exciting. But history is assigned for his independent reading 4 x per week. It is his favorite subject.
Many books are just there for them to come along and read in their free time. They are more likely to read if the tv and computer are off. I read aloud once or twice per day, and we use audio books in the van.
Oh, can I relate!!!! I am known for my simplistic style, but when it comes to books I feel like I could be on a book hoarding show.
We purged when we downsized but I went through again this week and purged 62 more books off of the kids shelves and somehow their shelves are STILL full of books.
I think I will stick with Thomas Jefferson who said “I simply cannot live without books.” They are my one weakness.
I have the room, when I finish building the bookshelves to the ceiling and rearranging, but oh so many books… Found more at the library book sale. How can you pass those up when it is exactly what you have on your planned reading list for history, poetry, classics and even a Mozart cd booklet!
You would understand my extreme excitement when my husband spotted a 6 foot bookshelf at the second hand furniture store when browsing their new items online and went to pick it up for me. I’m getting it organized in our living room with our school books, field guides, and free reads/read-alouds this weekend 🙂
I try to remind myself that having good reading material available for both myself and my children is half the battle! I’m glad there are still great books that I missed when I was younger that I can enjoy now as an adult. I know my children won’t get through them all, but I’m hoping they enjoy many of the “extras” as free reads as they get older (my oldest is 7).
